The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback situation will only continue to draw more debate throughout the 2026 season. That is because Aaron Rodgers has been 110% transparent with Steeler Nation that this will be his final season in the NFL. With the future of the position becoming a major storyline, new head coach Mike McCarthy is actively working through quarterback evaluations between Will Howard and Drew Allar as the organization searches for its next franchise option.

Both Howard and Allar represent long-shot, low-risk opportunities with serious upside if either player can develop into the quarterback the Steelers believe they can become. Neither player is guaranteed to be the answer, but both bring intriguing traits that could give Pittsburgh a legitimate foundation for the future.

Steelers insider Mike DeFabo was live at training camp when he shared a video on social media showing the quarterbacks working through an accuracy drill. It did not take long for fans to see why Howard has generated plenty of buzz throughout camp, as the second-year QB delivered an impressive display of precision and confidence.

Moments like these are exactly why the Steelers are taking a close look at their young quarterbacks. While training camp drills do not determine a player's future, every impressive throw adds another piece to the evaluation process. For Howard, this was another opportunity to show Pittsburgh that he has the talent and potential to become a name worth watching in the Steelers' long-term plans.

The Steelers have a fascinating situation developing at the quarterback position when looking toward the future. Allar entered college football with the reputation of a potential generational quarterback talent, but his draft stock quickly changed after some difficult performances in high-pressure moments. Those struggles, combined with a season-ending injury during the 2025 college football season, caused Allar to slide down draft boards before eventually falling to the 76th overall pick and landing in the Steel City.

Now, Allar finds himself competing for the future of the Steelers' quarterback position alongside Howard. The opportunity gives both young quarterbacks a fresh start in a system led by McCarthy, who has a long track record of developing and working with quarterbacks. For Pittsburgh, this creates an ideal scenario where the organization can evaluate two talented players without forcing the next franchise decision.

Steelers Do Not Need To Have The Answer At Quarterback Immediately

While Allar entered the league with a higher ceiling based on his physical tools and early projections, Howard has quickly earned attention with his confidence, accuracy, and ability to make plays when given opportunities. The former Ohio State quarterback has shown the type of traits that can turn a long-shot prospect into a legitimate NFL option if he continues to develop.

The Steelers do not need to have the answer at quarterback immediately, but they do need to identify which young player has the ability to lead the franchise beyond the Rodgers era. Whether that ends up being Allar, Howard, or someone else down the line, Pittsburgh has positioned itself with two intriguing prospects who could provide a major return if everything comes together.

Howard has generated an insane amount of hype for a sixth-round pick, especially considering he was not even drafted by this new Steelers regime. Despite that, it has become clear that the fan base is fully behind him as training camp continues. Every strong practice, impressive throw, and positive moment only adds more excitement surrounding what Howard could potentially become in Pittsburgh.
