Steelers Fans Hear Glowing Endorsement Of Quarterback: "That's A Young Man Taking A Step"

The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to have one of the most talked about quarterbacks rooms in the NFL throughout the preseason and throughout the remainder of training camp. There isn't any sort of quarterback controversy as it is clear and obvious that Aaron Rodgers is going to be the starter, but fans will get up in arms depending on how the rest of the quarterback room shapes up. Will Howard has a large number of supporters, while the team has placed Mason Rudolph as the primary backup to Rodgers as of now. Rookie Drew Allar is also exciting some fans after a strong start to training camp.

Howard did not play at all during the preseason in 2025 after suffering a freak hand injury during training camp, so the fan base is excited to finally see him take the field. Allar will also be making his NFL debut in the preseason, which is another exciting thing for fans to look forward to. The future of the position has been extremely murky for fans, and there is finally some hope with both Howard and Allar on the roster. Allar has particularly been flashing throughout training camp, and he has shown that he has a ton of potential.

Allar has always had the raw tools at the position, but his game has been unpolished. Head Coach Mike McCarthy is working on molding him into a potential starting quarterback in the NFL, and the head coach had some promising things to say about his QB while speaking to the media on Thursday morning.

"There has not been a day where he hasn’t made a throw where you say, 'OK, that’s a young man taking a step,'" McCarthy said.

McCarthy has a strong reputation for being able to work with young quarterbacks and developing them into the best versions of themselves. He worked with Rodgers as a young quarterback, Dak Prescott, and he even worked with guys like Joe Montana near the end of his career. He has learned a lot about the position through his career, so his words on Allar mean something.

It has already been said that the 2026 season is a developmental year for Allar, basically a redshirt season. It would take a lot for him to earn the backup job to Rodgers, but he has been getting some snaps with the second-string offense. No one has really emerged in the backup quarterback competition between Rudolph and Howard, and that could present an interesting opportunity for Allar. It was always expected that he would be the last quarterback on the depth chart and he would be developing throughout the year, but maybe he can make a run at the backup job.

For Allar to claim the backup job, it would take some great performances from him throughout the rest of camp and during the preseason games, and it would probably also take complete collapses from Rudolph and Howard. A lot of things would have to go right for Allar, but it is possible.

Steelers Have Been Successful So Far With Drew Allar

When Allar arrived in Pittsburgh McCarthy made it clear that the coaching staff would be tearing down everything the young quarterback knows about playing the position. McCarthy was basically going to rework Allar, and so far that has worked. The rookie's throwing mechanics look completely different, and he has been successful with them so far through training camp. Allar has made some impressive throws that have made waves on social media, and the hype behind him is beginning to grow. Hopefully he can play well in the preseason, where he is sure to see some extended playing time.
