The Pittsburgh Steelers are beginning to see the intensity of training camp rise as the team continues preparing for the 2026 season. Competition has increased across the roster, and Thursday’s practice provided the first major example of how quickly emotions can boil over when players are battling for every rep.

Steelers' Patrick Queen celebrates with Payton Wilson during a win over the Miami Dolphins at home during the 2025 season.
That was quickly followed up on Thursday when a fight did indeed break out. A heated moment took place between wide receiver Ben Skowronek and linebacker Patrick Queen during practice. What started as physical competition quickly turned into a skirmish that drew players from both sides of the ball.
According to SteelerNation’s Brandon Wallace, Queen appeared to believe Skowronek was holding him too aggressively. The veteran linebacker did not have to handle the situation alone, as Payton Wilson immediately came to his teammate’s defense.
"First fight? Skowronek and Queen get into it," Wallace reported. "Payton Wilson comes to Queen’s aid and slams Skowronek to the ground by the back of his shoulder pads. Both sides come to break it up. Looked like Queen felt like he was being held too aggressively."
This is the type of update Steelers fans should be excited to hear from a training camp perspective. There were plenty of rumors and concerns that McCarthy’s decision to eliminate live tackling could prevent Pittsburgh from reaching the physical level needed to compete throughout the regular season.

Steelers' Mike McCarthy speaks to the media during mandatory minicamp in 2026.
That clearly does not appear to be the case. The Steelers may be approaching practice differently under McCarthy, but the players are still bringing the intensity, competing hard and refusing to give away anything to their teammates.
Steelers insider Jenna Harner predicted earlier in the week that a fight could happen soon as tensions continued to build. It sounds like she was right. The Skowronek and Queen exchange may not have started as a full fight, but it quickly became physical enough for both sides to step in and separate the players.
Skowronek is a no-nonsense, gritty player, and that mentality helped him earn Pro Bowl honors for his special teams role with Pittsburgh in 2025. Hearing that he helped bring this level of intensity, while Queen and Wilson immediately responded, should show fans that this team is not lacking toughness.
Inter-team fighting is never ideal, especially if it creates an injury risk. However, in the middle of a competitive football training camp, moments like this can reveal how much the players care about winning their individual battles. For now, Steelers fans can feel encouraged knowing the fight and physicality are being brought to Latrobe.
Steelers’ New Era Is Starting Quickly
This new era of Steelers football has wasted no time in showing Mike McCarthy’s identity. After 18 seasons coaching two historic franchises in the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys, McCarthy begins his 19th season as a head coach in Pittsburgh eager to get the job done and remind the city what winning meaningful football games feels like.
This opportunity means even more because Pittsburgh is McCarthy’s hometown team. He understands what this organization represents to the Steel City, and he will do everything possible to bring winning football back. It starts with the competitive fire already being shown during training camp.
McCarthy knows that training camp fights will not determine whether Pittsburgh wins in 2026, but they can reveal the mindset of a team searching for its edge. The Steelers need that urgency, toughness and accountability to carry into every practice, every game and every critical moment moving forward this season.
