"There's Some Challenges": Steelers' Mike Tomlin Gets Honest About Mike McCarthy On Live Television

The Pittsburgh Steelers lost to the Houston Texans in a 2025 AFC Wild Card Game and no one really knew at the time what was going to happen shortly after that. Legendary Head Coach Mike Tomlin made the decision to step down from his post as the leader of the locker room following 19 incredible seasons. Instead of going the traditional route and hiring a young, up-and-coming coordinator, the organization brought in Mike McCarthy. It may not have been the most high-profile move; however, it led to Aaron Rodgers realizing that he had one more year left to give to the NFL.

Just because Tomlin won't be roaming the sideline for any specific team in 2026 does not mean that Steelers fans won't be seeing him pretty regularly. He took a media role with NBC and will appear on Football Night in America. A lot of people are excited for this because it's not all that often that someone with his experience is giving his opinions on television every week during the season.

Thursday evening's Hall of Fame Game was circled on the calendars of football aficionados everywhere. The sport that so many people love is officially back in action, which means the road to the Super Bowl is officially on. Football Night in America's first broadcast with Tomlin was live from Canton and the former head coach was quite talkative.

It would be impossible to not at least ask Tomlin about the new situation in Pittsburgh. He spent nearly two decades of his life there with the franchise. At first, he had a lot of good things to say about McCarthy coming to town and Rodgers joining him once again.

"Mike's perfect for them and they're perfect for Mike," Tomlin stated. "Certainly being a Pittsburgh native, he understands the standard that is Pittsburgh and he'll embrace that. His coaching experience will also allow him to manage that. He's got an awesome résumé. Obviously, the confetti has rained down on him before with his current quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Man, there's no substitute for shared success."

These were great words from Tomlin and solid analysis. He definitely doesn't forget losing Super Bowl XLV to the Green Bay Packers at the end of the 2010 season. Steelers fans are hoping that the relationship between McCarthy and Rodgers will lead to postseason success in the Steel City, something that hasn't happened since the 2016 campaign. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows from Tomlin, however. He added that it's not going to be incredibly easy for the newest coach in Pittsburgh.

"Those waters run deep. He's positioned to do well," Tomlin said. "Certainly, there's some challenges when you come into a new situation, but boy there's a lot to like about continuity in this new experience for him."

Tomlin is spot on. Just because McCarthy has experience and a Super Bowl ring doesn't mean that everything will go smoothly right away. It could take some time for the locker room to get used to how he approaches game days and the season in general as it progresses.

The Steelers had it good for 19 years with Tomlin in charge. He is likely to be inducted into the Hall of Fame one day himself. McCarthy is another guy who should be enshrined in Canton down the line. Pittsburgh is lucky to transition from one to the other, but that doesn't mean it's going to be great immediately. McCarthy really might have to work hard to get the best results on the field.

Steelers Will Have To Wait For Tomlin To Cover One Of Their Games

While the Football Night in America crew often will quickly go over the slate of Sunday games that occur during the season, the broadcast typically really focuses on the Sunday Night Football contest. The Steelers will not be featured in one of those until Week 10 when they take on the Cincinnati Bengals. Over half the season will be over at that point, so it will be interesting to see what Tomlin will have to say that far into the year about his former team.
