Steelers’ Broderick Jones Making His Name Known With Strong Practice Shutting Down Nick Herbig

The Pittsburgh Steelers got some thrilling news when it became clear that Broderick Jones would be healthy enough to compete in 2026. There was real concern about where Jones’ career was heading following his serious injury. Now, he is back on the field and attempting to prove that labeling him as a failed first-round pick would be premature.

Jones does not return to the same offensive line he left behind. Pittsburgh continued investing in the unit, creating a legitimate logjam as he tries to earn back his place. Nothing appears guaranteed for Jones, but his presence gives Mike McCarthy another talented option during an all-in season.

The biggest question surrounding Jones has always involved his consistency in pass protection. His athletic ability helped make him the 14th overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, but flashes of dominance have too often been followed by costly losses. Coming back from injury only created more uncertainty because some rust was expected as he regained his confidence and timing.

However, Steelers insider Christopher Carter shared a revealing update during Saturday night’s practice. Jones reportedly bounced back from some difficult one-on-one periods by defeating two of Pittsburgh’s young pass rushers on consecutive reps.

"Broderick Jones is putting together a much better pass-pro showing tonight," Carter reported. "After a strong win against Nick Herbig, Jones just beat Jack Sawyer. Two wins in a row for Jones after some rough one-on-one periods recently."

Those victories do not prove that every concern surrounding Jones has disappeared. Training camp reps are designed to test players, and one impressive stretch cannot erase the inconsistency that placed his future under such a bright spotlight.

Still, context matters. Jones is returning from a serious injury and facing talented pass rushers while attempting to rebuild his technique. Nick Herbig has already demonstrated that he can create problems for NFL tackles, while Jack Sawyer is another promising defender fighting to establish himself. Beating both players consecutively is meaningful progress for someone who desperately needed a positive response.

The update also suggests Jones is beginning to knock off the expected rust faster than some anticipated. His recent one-on-one struggles could have damaged his confidence, but responding with two strong wins is exactly what Pittsburgh needed to see. Jones cannot change what happened before his injury, but he can control how he responds now.

Steelers Could Still Benefit From Jones

Having Jones back in the competition is awesome news for Pittsburgh, even if his future with the organization remains uncertain. The Steelers do not need to force him into a starting role because of where he was drafted. They need to identify the five offensive linemen who give Aaron Rodgers the best opportunity to remain healthy.

That competition could bring out the best version of Jones. Instead of being handed a position, he must prove himself against improved depth and earn the trust of a new coaching staff. That pressure may be exactly what he needs at this stage of his career.

There is also reason for optimism with James Campen and McCarthy overseeing his development. Jones still possesses the size, movement ability and raw talent that once made him an exciting offensive tackle prospect. The challenge has always been turning those traits into dependable football.

Pittsburgh is entering an all-in 2026 season with Rodgers galvanizing the organization during what is expected to be his final NFL campaign. Every extra bit of protection matters. Even if Jones never completely reclaims the role once envisioned for him, becoming a reliable swing tackle or forcing his way back into the starting conversation would provide valuable insurance.

Hearing that Jones responded after some rough practices is a very good sign. His comeback remains unfinished, but those consecutive victories offered real evidence that he may still have something important to contribute.
