New Threat Enters AFC North As Steelers See Ravens Gush Over Rookie

There is currently a lot of focus on the Pittsburgh Steelers because of a massive shift at the head-coaching position. No only did Mike Tomlin step down and was Mike McCarthy brought in to lead the way, but the team now may have an offensive-first philosophy for the first time in decades. The organization isn't the only one to be going through some sort of sizable change, however. The AFC North has a total of three fresh faces leading teams, with the Baltimore Ravens landing Jesse Minter and the Cleveland Browns giving the role to Todd Monken. A lot is looking different with training camps underway.

The Browns have hadn't success for the better part of the 21st century, but the battles between the Steelers and Ravens have never went unnoticed. Baltimore parted ways with John Harbaugh after 18 seasons, so Minter's message will really have to land in the locker room. Some players, though, only know what it is like to play for the first-time head coach.

The Ravens were not shy about adjusting the roster during the 2026 offseason. One of the biggest happenings to note for the franchise was the NFL Draft haul pulled in by general manager Eric DeCosta. Pittsburgh had 10 total selections that were made, but Baltimore bested that by 1, taking 11 rookies back in April. Many players are looking to carve out respective roles for themselves.

Particularly, the front office invested in the wide receiver position. DeCosta and Minter decided to take Ja'Kobi Lane out of the University of Southern California and Elijah Sarratt from Indiana in the third and fourth rounds, respectively. These additions could be key to fully unlocking an offense that already has a dynamic quarterback in Lamar Jackson.

The Steelers received a little bit of a warning from ESPN's Jamison Hensley on Saturday. Apparently, Lane is showing out during his rookie camp and really turning heads.

"In 27 years of covering the Ravens, I’m not sure I’ve seen a rookie have a training camp quite like wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane," Hensley wrote. "Every day, Lane produces a highlight-making catch. And today, he has Derrick Henry leaping in the air in celebration."

It seems like Lane's Ravens teammates are appreciating his efforts on the field. After signing Zay Flowers to a massive contract extension, Baltimore hitting a home run on the selection of Lane could provide some serious problems for the Steelers and rest of the AFC North. This is certainly going to be a situation to keep an eye on as training camps wrap up and preseason contests get underway. The division could be looking at a star who is blossoming immediately at the professional level.

Hensley is not the only one noticing Lane's strong play. It has been very well documented that the rookie receiver is quickly becoming one of Jackson's favorite targets. The rapport between the two will only get better moving forward.

The Steelers and Ravens had an incredible Week 18 matchup that decided the division's winner at the end of the 2025 regular season. Pittsburgh got the best of its rival thanks to a Tyler Loop missed field goal kick, but it will be hard to find analysts who believe Baltimore isn't better than McCarthy's group as the meaningful football games get closer and closer.

Steelers Have To Lock In Contract With Flowers' And Lane's Worst Nightmare

Pittsburgh remains hesitant to give a legitimate contract extension to Joey Porter Jr. This news coming from Baltimore is just more of a reason to ink the cornerback o a long-term deal. He is a true shutdown defender and it makes complete sense to keep him around for the future. The Steelers and Porter's representation need to soon find some common ground so that here are no questions about who is going to serve as the defense's best pass defender.
