Steelers' Mike McCarthy Addresses Polarizing Joey Porter Jr Situation: "This Is A Challenge"

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been talked about a ton throughout the 2026 offseason due to the coaching changes and the pursuit of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The QB and Head Coach Mike McCarthy reuniting in Pittsburgh has been something that the NFL world has eaten up ever since the veteran signal-caller decided to sign right before Organized Team Activities (OTAs). He has made it clear that the 2026 season will be his last, which has brought even more attention to the team. Anything that has to do with Rodgers is going to be a big story, but the contract negotiations with cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is what's currently grabbing headlines in Pittsburgh.

Porter is entering the final season of his rookie deal, and he wants an extension before the season begins. This led to him holding-in throughout the offseason program, and he was expected to be holding-in throughout training camp. He was actually placed on the Physically Unable To Perform (PUP) list right before camp began due to a reported back issue, but it probably also has something to do with his contract as the timing of his injury was definitely suspicious.

The star cornerback and the organization have been working on a new deal, but it doesn't seem like the two sides are very close on getting something done. McCarthy spoke to the media on Monday, and he was asked about the contract situation with Porter. He gave an update while also trying to provide some perspective.

"I've always — and I learned this in my early years as a head coach — you have to separate the business and football," McCarthy explained. "Sometimes, it's easier in others. This is a challenge for both Joey and us because we're a first-year staff. We've seen them play, compete against Joey. I would love the opportunity to coach Joey Porter. I know our defensive guys would love the opportunity. So we're at an impasse right here and you got to respect that. Every one of us has a contract. The organization, they have beliefs and so forth. But yeah, that's just kind of where we are."

Most fans in Pittsburgh would probably say that they wished a deal were done already, and most fans probably thought a deal would be done by this point of training camp. This is starting to become a much bigger problem as the regular season grows closer.

Porter does not have any major accolades, which is a big reason these negotiations are still going. He and his team value him much higher than the franchise. He believes he should be paid near the top of the cornerback market, and he should based on the fact that he can take any wide receiver out of a game. He doesn't have a ton of ball production or anything like that, but he is a great player that the Steelers have to find a way to lock up.

When a player is holding-in like Porter, it would be easy for the head coach to publicly reprimand that player and call him out for being a distraction to the team. McCarthy did not do that, and he actually did the opposite by providing some perspective. He propped Porter and the defense up while acknowledging how tricky the business side of the NFL can be.

Contracts are always messy, especially when negotiations get to this point. There is just over three weeks until the Steelers open the regular season against the Atlanta Falcons, and the organization better find a way to get Porter a new contract by then. He is a big part of the defense and he is critical to the team's success as a whole.
