Steelers' Super Bowl Aspirations Are Clear For Aaron Rodgers: "That's Why I Came Back"

The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the 2026 season without many expectations from the outside world. The team has made the postseason in three consecutive years, but all that has come from that has been a trio of embarrassing eliminations. There is no reason to especially believe that this version of the Steelers has any chance to make a deep playoff push, but those inside the building are still striving to reach that seventh Lombardi Trophy. Pittsburgh last won the Super Bowl at the end of the 2008 season, and the team has not advanced in the postseason in nearly a decade. The fan base is desperate for some tangible success, and Aaron Rodgers believes that could come this year.

Rodgers has already announced that the 2026 season would be his last, and he has strongly considered retirement in each of the last two seasons. He wouldn't return to the field and put his body on the line if he did not think the current group in Pittsburgh had a chance to make a legitimate run at the Super Bowl. Fans are pretty pessimistic about the outlook of the team, but it sounds like the guys in the locker room believe there is a real shot that this team has what it takes to get the job done.

The veteran quarterback joined Adam Schein on Mad Dog Sports Radio, and he spoke about the franchise's Super Bowl aspirations and why he believes the group can get the job done.

"Yeah, of course," Rodgers said. "That's why I came back. I like what Pat Graham has done on defense, you know we added a few guys, some impact players for us. We added Jaquan Brisker, the safety who was in Chicago, we added Jamel Dean, who is a veteran, we added Sebastian Joseph-Day who is a great, rotational interior d-lineman. I like the way that we drafted too. Got some good value out of our later-round picks."

Rodgers spoke a lot about the defensive side of the ball, and he clearly likes the hire of new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. He also spoke to every major addition that was made on that side of the ball, and he even highlighted the younger guys that were brought in through the draft. 

This includes players like Gabriel Rubio and Robert Spears-Jennings.

Steelers' Aaron Rodgers Sees Strengths Throughout The Roster

There were times when either the defense or the offense was a problem for the Steelers during the 2025 season. There were some games the defense definitely lost and some games where the offense just never found its footing. Rodgers touched on the defense, but he also noted the improvements on his side of the ball.

"Offensively, we're younger outside of kind of myself and Bobby Tonyan coming back being our third tight end," Rodgers said. "We got a great center, left guard, left tackle who are ascending players. Pat Freiermuth has had a really good camp. We added Rico Dowdle to the mix with Jaylen Warren, who are both dynamic players. I like the roster, and then we have the most clutch kicker in the game. We've got a Pittsburgh long snapper who is really good at his job, and we've got an Aussie punter who is one of the best in the business. I like the roster as a whole, we have good veteran leadership."

Rodgers dissected every piece of the roster, and he seems to be thrilled with every move that has been made by the front office. A big part of how far this team can go is going to be up to him. He is going to have to be willing to take more shots down the field and hang in the pocket longer than he did during the 2025 season. He believes this team can go far, but a lot of that is going to come down to his play.
