A Divide Is Forming Between Steelers Leadership And The Locker Room Amid Joey Porter Jr Contract Problem

The Pittsburgh Steelers have never been shy about drafting talent and then developing it up until the time when guys on rookie contracts become due for extensions. That has been very evident once again throughout the 2026 offseason, with three members of the 2023 NFL Draft class receiving new deals following strong starts to their careers. Unfortunately, the most expensive one of them all has not gotten done. The organization plays in its first regular-season matchup on Sunday, and Joey Porter Jr. is still calmly ramping up without any future security. No one is quite sure if he is going to end up playing or not.

The Atlanta Falcons will travel to the Steel City and still have no clue if Pittsburgh's top corner will be suited up for the matchup. Contract drama like this can take a toll on the whole roster because it affects game planning and morale to a point. That is why it wasn't surprising when Jalen Ramsey came out recently and noted that the Steelers better pay Porter because he deserves it.

More information about this came to light on Thursday night when Pittsburgh Post-Gazette beat writer Ray Fittipaldo joined 93.7's The PM Team w/Poni & Mueller show. The reporter was going into detail about everything regarding the potential deal, and hinted that it has been a very tough stretch for the team as a whole because of the impasse.

"I just get the feeling that this is weighing on Joey a little bit," Fittipaldo said. "We talked to him last week and he said, 'It's been tough,' and I think we might be to the point now where, you know, Steelers leadership is getting involved. I think they maybe want to know as well 'cause you guys heard Jalen Ramsey. Jalen Ramsey came out and said the Steelers have to do this."

Fittipaldo discussed more about what could be going on internally. Aside from just Omar Khan, it's very possible that Owner Art Rooney II is also getting involved in the potential conversations. This doesn't necessarily mean good things are happening. There could be a little bit of a divide between the players rooting for Porter and the front office's stubbornness.

"I think we might be getting to the point where — I'm not going to say it's a distraction because Cam Heyward said the leadership is too strong to let that happen, but I think everyone in that locker room wants this to be over with, and until it's over with, there's going to be a little bit of, um, you know, people being upset in that locker room," Fittipaldo noted.

This is a little bit deeper than someone just getting a fresh extension. It's clear that a lot of the individuals in the locker room want to support their teammate, and any disagreements with the leadership group and the corner could be having a negative effect altogether. This is something that can really alter the reputation of a franchise, so it's a notable observation.

A deal could legitimately be agreed to at any point from Thursday evening to maybe even Sunday morning. The Steelers have been playing hardball, and it doesn't appear that the approach is appealing to everyone else around. Porter is one of the better cornerbacks throughout the entire NFL, and the recent market boom has him very interested in being paid accordingly. The question comes down to what do the decision-makers believe his value is?

Steelers Would Be Foolish To Not Lock Porter Into A Long-Term Deal

It has not been very often that Pittsburgh has found a top-notch cornerback in the NFL Draft. That finally happened when the 32nd overall selection was made back in 2023. The best part about Porter is that he has continuously gotten better during the course of his career. Now, he wants to continue his journey with the Steelers, but being properly compensated is part of the plan as well. It won't be a great look for the organization if a small wedge is driven in between leadership and the players.
