"One Of The Central Reasons": Steelers' Mike Tomlin Gives The Full Truth About His Decision To Step Down

The football world was relatively surprised when former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin made the decision to step down as the leader of the proud franchise. It's not hard to argue that it was time for a change in the Steel City after nearly two decades of one voice running the show. The team hasn't been victorious in the postseason since the 2016 campaign, so there's certainly a fresh sense of optimism that has arrived because a new regime is in town. It's pretty shocking to believe that someone like TJ Watt was selected in the 2017 NFL Draft and has yet to win a playoff game.

Mike McCarthy is tasked with bringing back January success to Pittsburgh, and veterans like Watt and Cam Heyward are truly running out of time in their respective careers to make a legitimate push for a Super Bowl ring. A lot of the responsibility for the recent failures has to be placed on Tomlin, as he was the one in charge of the entire operation.

After his resignation, there wasn't too much discussion about why he decided to leave the Steelers organization. There were guesses as to what he was thinking behind the scenes, but all anyone truly knew is that he addressed the roster after an ugly postseason loss to the Houston Texans, and he was soon after walking out of the facility for the last time.

Fans will still get to hear from Tomlin throughout the 2026 season. He is going to be a regular on Football Night in America every Sunday for NBC. One of his first tasks in his new role was actually doing a one-on-one sit-down with his long-time rival, John Harbaugh. During their conversation, Tomlin mentioned both Heyward and Watt as being two of the reasons why he removed himself as the Steelers' head coach.

"I think that was one of the central reasons why I stepped away," Tomlin said. "It's guys that I worked with for a long time and helped grow as young men like Cam Heyward [and] TJ Watt. I just thought they were deserving of what you just mentioned. Like, the fresh optimism that comes with transition. I wanted that for them. You know what I mean? I feel like they were carrying my 19 years of bags, you know?"

This speaks volumes about Tomlin's leadership. Sure, he was likely tired after so many seasons as the head man, but the love he had for specific players also drove him to step down. It hints at the fact that he truly believed he wouldn't have been able to get them over the hump in the next couple of years. He didn't know McCarthy would be coming in to replace him; however, the Super Bowl XLIII champion figured change would be beneficial to the veterans.

The pressure is now shifting off of Tomlin and onto McCarthy as well as the two defenders. There won't be any excuses to be made about the previous regime any longer. While Watt and Heyward would probably love to still be playing for the only head coach either of them ever knew at the professional level, there is also likely a sense of freshness that could go a long way. Time will tell if the plethora of changes will be good or bad for the Steelers as a whole.

Steelers Could Really Be Missing Tomlin Sooner Rather Than Later

Fans can say what they want about Tomlin, but the man is a winner. Having 19 straight non-losing seasons is not something to scoff at. Now, postseason success became increasingly harder as his tenure began to grow longer than anyone could have expected; however, he is a leader of men. His reflection about his resignation proves that as well. He didn't want to be the sole reason that certain players weren't able to find greater success.
