The Pittsburgh Steelers were able to win a tight game over the Atlanta Falcons to open up the 2026 season. This was Mike McCarthy's regular-season debut as the head coach of his hometown team, and it was good to see the seasoned leader get a victory on his home field. The win left a lot to be desired as Pittsburgh only was victorious by seven points against an inferior team that was starting the third quarterback on its depth chart. However, Pittsburgh was able to keep pace with the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC North by starting the season with a 1-0 record.

Many fans were excited for the 2026 season as McCarthy would be reuniting with Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback. The two had a ton of success together during their time with the Green Bay Packers, and there was hope that the duo would be able to recapture some of that magic in Pittsburgh. The two left a lot to be desired on Sunday as the offense scored just one touchdown on the day, and overall the group struggled against a weak Falcons defense.
Yards on the ground were hard to come by, and Rodgers' arm was relied on heavily. McCarthy spoke to the media after the win, and he praised his defense while criticizing himself and his offense for its performance.
"We were obviously in a one-score lead plus for most of the game." McCarthy said. "Offensively, it was a little herky-jerky, starting with me. It's getting into a flow, was just a bit challenging. Third down was the thing that kind of stood out to me where we maybe got to get more favorable and convert those. But I love the way they battled back. Boy we had some tough flags against us, and that's football. That's September football, so we clearly have a lot to correct tomorrow. It's a good place to be after your first win and know that you have room for improvement."
A lot of the areas that McCarthy criticized were evident when looking at the stats after the game. Pittsburgh converted on just three of 13 third downs, which is a number that has to improve if the team wants to win games against better opponents. The penalties will also need to be cleaned up, although Pittsburgh was much better in that regard than Atlanta.

The Steelers need to become more balanced on offense. The group had just 58 rushing yards on the day as neither Jaylen Warren or Rico Dowdle had an easy time finding space to run. Rodgers was relied on heavily as he threw the ball 41 times but completed just 24 of those attempts. He did a good job protecting the football and finished the day with 206 yards and a touchdown pass to tight end Pat Freiermuth.
The connection between Rodgers and DK Metcalf struggled as the receiver dropped some passes, but Michael Pittman Jr. shined while being given limited opportunities.
Steelers Need To Clean Things Up On Offense Before Week 2
The Steelers will now be preparing to take on the former AFC Champion in Week 2. Pittsburgh will travel up to Massachusetts to take on the New England Patriots, which mirrors Pittsburgh's schedule from 2025. Pittsburgh came out on top of that game, but New England is a much-improved unit since that contest took place.
It will be a challenge to win that contest, and a better offensive performance will be necessary. The Steelers cannot bank on the defense performing as well as it did in Week 1. Drake Maye is a former MVP candidate and is coming into the game with a chip on his shoulder after a brutal season opener.
