Steelers Trade Partner For Joey Porter Jr Quickly Emerges In NFC

There is no better word to describe the Pittsburgh Steelers' standoff with Joey Porter Jr. other than shocking. The team has historically not been able to land top cornerbacks in the NFL Draft, and that seemed to change in 2023. The 32nd overall selection happened to be the defender out of Penn State, who has done nothing except for get better since then. Now, however, the organization and Porter are at an impasse in contract talks. On Sunday morning, it was officially reported that the franchise is open to listening to trade offers for him, which would completely go against a reputation of drafting and developing.

It's hard to believe that an organization known for rewarding guys for improving year-over-year would decide to shop its top young talent. There must be some serious disagreements going on behind the scenes, and that is why everything has hit a boiling point. For the Steelers, a first-round selection in return could seem reasonable. That doesn't mean, however, that any other team would be willing to pay that price.

There is a situation to keep an eye on out in the NFC, though. Back in June, the NFL world was hit with a shocking story regarding then-Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold. He was arrested on eight felony accounts that carry a possible sentence of life in prison. He was released from the team not too long after, which has left a whole in the franchise's secondary.

If you pair the depth issues for head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes with the fact that they made some procedural moves over the weekend, ideas could start to form. 

Cap space is always something that can be messed around with, but it's hard to ignore that the Lions chose to open up this amount of financial freedom just prior to the regular season beginning. It can be used, or rolled over into 2027. It's feasible to connect the dots between Detroit's need for cornerback depth and the Steelers' new willingness to deal Porter.

The Lions currently possess all of their own draft picks for 2027, so the idea that a deal could get done is reasonable. However, if the Steelers are pressing for a first-round, some front offices could believe that the ask is too much. When Detroit takes the field on Sunday, the performance from its secondary could end up determining if Holmes calls Omar Khan to get something done sooner rather than later.

This development was certainly not fully expected because the Steelers tend to agree on last-minute deals all the time. Now, however, Porter won't be playing in Week 1 and could theoretically never wear the Black and Gold again. This reporting comes at a time when distractions are supposed to be kept at a minimum. Unfortunately, that is not the case because of the cornerback's situation.

The Lions make complete sense for a possible destination. Detroit has Super Bowl aspirations and the league's easiest schedule. Porter would be able to jump right in and contribute after getting acclimated. Holmes and Khan coming to an agreement is something to keep an eye on.

Steelers Have Completely Botched Porter's Recent Extension Talks

While Pittsburgh could know something about Porter's game that the average fan doesn't, he is legitimately a top NFL cornerback. Cap space can always be manipulated, so that's not necessarily an excuse for the Steelers' brass. All-in-all, guaranteed money could be a major factor in why the two sides are so far apart. Someone like Holmes could be more than willing to pay top dollar for a star-in-he-making like Porter.
