The Pittsburgh Steelers received a long-awaited answer from Joey Porter Jr. after his contract deadline passed. Porter intends to play football for Pittsburgh this season despite failing to secure a long-term extension. The remaining mystery is when his body will allow him to return.

That matters because Porter's absence has become one of the most confusing stories surrounding the organization. Contract tension, conditioning questions and a recurring back problem have blurred the effort to separate the business dispute from the physical issue. Porter has now addressed both his intentions and the injury directly.
ESPN reporter Brooke Pryor shared the update after Porter spoke with Pittsburgh media Thursday for the first time since negotiations ended without an extension. Her report eased the largest concern while confirming his immediate availability remains uncertain. Porter is not planning to stay away because of the failed contract talks, but he is still working toward being physically ready.
"Joey Porter Jr. just spoke to the media for the first time since the deadline passed without a contract extension," Pryor reported. "He said he plans to play, but exactly when is still up in the air, and he continues to ramp up. In addition to the conditioning, JPJ said his back still flares up."
That is the clearest explanation Porter has provided during this saga. Before the season, he would not guarantee he would play without an extension and said he needed to speak with his representatives and team officials. Now that the deadline has passed, Porter has removed that uncertainty from the equation.
The answer is encouraging, but it does not give the Steelers an immediate solution. Porter missed Pittsburgh's first two games while completing a ramp-up process after losing valuable preparation time. His admission confirms the injury cannot simply be dismissed as a convenient label attached to a contract standoff.
Porter originally aggravated his back on the first day of training camp and spent a significant portion of the summer on the physically unable to perform list. He eventually returned to practice, but the issue resurfaced as Pittsburgh attempted to increase his workload. That history explains why neither Porter nor Mike McCarthy is willing to establish a firm return date.

Pittsburgh would certainly prefer to have its top outside corner available against the Cincinnati Bengals. Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins present the most dangerous receiving combination the Steelers have faced this season, and Cincinnati enters the AFC North matchup with a 2-0 record. Porter's size, competitiveness and man-coverage ability would give Patrick Graham another important option for handling those weapons.
The Steelers cannot allow the opponent or public pressure to dictate a medical decision, however. Sending Porter onto the field before his back can tolerate a complete workload could create another setback and extend the absence even further. His return must be based on whether he can practice consistently, recover properly and perform without the condition repeatedly interrupting his progress.
Steelers Finally Have A Clear Porter Answer
Porter's comments should also cool some of the speculation surrounding his commitment to the team. He did not receive the extension he wanted, yet he publicly stated that he plans to play. That does not repair every concern about his future in Pittsburgh, but it separates his current availability from the unresolved financial disagreement.
The next meaningful answer must come on the practice field. Porter needs to stack productive sessions together, complete the conditioning process and show the coaching staff that his back can withstand NFL game demands. Until that happens, every projected return date remains little more than an educated guess.
Pittsburgh finally knows that Porter wants to rejoin the defense, which is meaningful progress after weeks of conflicting signals. The franchise still cannot circle the game in which that return will happen. His words settled the question about his intentions, but his back will ultimately decide when the Steelers regain one of their most important defenders.
