The Pittsburgh Steelers are heading into Week 4 of the 2026 NFL regular season with the star cornerback Joey Porter Jr.'s contract dispute continuing to loom over them. Porter Jr. has shown no real signs of playing for the Steelers anytime soon, and his status for the team's matchup against the rival Cleveland Browns has been updated to OUT. Most Steelers fans are tired of this saga and are prepared for the organization to either compensate him or send him elsewhere so that Pittsburgh can get back to focusing solely on its opponents.

Porter Jr. has reportedly been dealing with a back injury since mid-summer, something that has hindered his ability to get on the practice field. There is a lot of speculation surrounding the injury, with most fans believing he is using this as a tactic in contract negotiations. Whatever is really going on needs to be solved fast, as Pittsburgh either needs Porter Jr. to get back in the lineup or ship him out of the Steel City while he still has trade market value.
There have been plenty of trade rumors surrounding the talented cornerback, which have been heating up in recent weeks. It seems less likely that Porter Jr. will ever play in the Black and Gold again as the days drag on. The situation spilling into the regular season is what has damaged his image in Pittsburgh for most fans, as this is not a usual occurrence, especially for an organization that operates like the Steelers do.
On a recent episode of The Pomp and Joe Show from 93.7 The Fan, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly commented on Porter Jr.'s game status for Week 4 as well as the trade rumors surrounding the young star.
"I do not think he will play. He is still listed as conditioning even though he has been a full participant at walkthroughs," Kaboly explained. "How can you continue to get your conditioning where it needs to be if you are only going through walkthroughs? I look at it like he is buying another week so that [the Steelers] can trade him. I would say over the next five to seven days would be the optimal time to get a trade done."
As mentioned earlier, Porter Jr. will not play Thursday night. Multiple teams have shown interest in trading for Porter Jr., but have not met Pittsburgh's asking price. Signing him to a deal that he deems fair is also a separate issue that teams have to consider before making a move for Porter Jr.
It truly seems like Porter Jr. will be a question mark for a large portion of the 2026 season, especially if Pittsburgh does not receive a trade offer that it feels is fair compensation for the star cornerback.

While the Steelers could still offer Porter Jr. a contract that he believes is fair, it seems like his image in Pittsburgh has been permanently tarnished. Many fans are tired of the situation as a whole and are strong believers in the "if you aren't with us, you're against us" mindset. Porter Jr. might not want to play for the Steelers anymore, even if offered a lucrative contract.
Steelers' Secondary Could Be Extremely Thin Against Browns
Pittsburgh will have to go deep in their depth chart yet again. Defensive back Jalen Ramsey is questionable for the matchup against the Browns with a wrist injury. Cornerback Brandin Echols is dealing with a concussion. Standout safety DeShon Elliott remains on injured reserve with a hamstring issue. These players are key pieces to Pittsburgh's secondary and could be a cause for concern come game day. The Steelers will have to deploy Asante Samuel Jr., who played well in Pittsburgh's first couple games of the season, but had a rough half in Week 3, which led to him seeing less playing time the rest of the contest. Rookie Daylen Everette was thrust into action and had a solid performance. It will be interesting to see how the lineup shakes out come kickoff.
