Steelers Have CBA Loophole That Can Ruin Joey Porter Jr's 2026 Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers inspired a little bit of optimism when cornerback Joey Porter Jr. was listed as a full participant on the Monday and Tuesday injury reports. Ahead of a Thursday Night Football matchup against the Cleveland Browns, however, these were just estimations. On Wednesday, the team announced that the disgruntled defender will not be active for the AFC North showdown. On the first two days of the preparation, a back ailment was not listed as something that was expected to hinder the former second-rounder. That unfortunately ended up being added on just a day before the primetime contest.

At this point, it almost seems inevitable that the Steelers and Porter are nearing an ugly ending to their relationship. This back issue will likely continue to "flare up" unless a new contract is given to the defender.

One of the more challenging pieces to this entire situation is that there is no blood test or kind of imaging that can prove Porter is actually having back pain or not. That should lead one to believe that he has all the power when it comes to if he will play or sit. However, recent analysis has painted a different picture that the corner should possibly pay attention to.

The Steelers, starting at the top with Art Rooney II, cannot be happy that someone who is under contract is possibly toying with the coaching staff and game plans. If everything has been documented properly, the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) actually might allow Pittsburgh to retaliate in a way that really puts Porter in a tough spot.

NFL insider Mike Florio joined The PM Team w/Poni & Mueller for his normal Wednesday slot to discuss the theatrics that are currently going on in the Steel City. He made it very clear that the Steelers do have a way to completely turn this around. No one should be surprised if Rooney takes action and escalates this entire predicament to a completely different level.

"Conduct detrimental to the team. Fine him. Suspend him without pay," Florio stated. "They're paying him $3.9 million divided by 18 every week. You could suspend him without pay for four games if you properly document the record and you are willing to let this become something that feels awkward and ugly. That's the challenge. Do you want to take that route? But, they could ultimately suspend him for conduct detrimental to the team, and does that really help them?"

This does provide the Steelers a simple avenue to let Porter know that enough is enough. However, again, it is tough to prove someone wrong who is claiming that he is experiencing back pain. Regardless, Rooney might want to send a message and take this route to let everyone know that Pittsburgh is not going to cave during these types of conflicts.

This entire situation has gotten uglier week-in and week-out. Something is going to have to give, and no one is quite sure what that will be just yet. The Steelers have no reason to trade the defender if the offers coming in are not good enough by their standards.

The CBA is in place for a reason. Florio broke down exactly how the Steelers could use it to their advantage. With that said, the most important thing is having documentation to back up and defend the organization in the event that the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) would file some kind of grievance. 

Steelers Have Likely Had Enough Of The Porter Fiasco

While fining or suspending Porter to put its foot down seems like a possible route to take, Pittsburgh may just want everything to be over with. The franchise is 2-1 and any distraction will be viewed as a bad one that needs to disappear. The entire timeline of this contract dilemma has been unfortunate; however, the Steelers will most likely soon take action one way or another.
