The Pittsburgh Steelers could face some uncomfortable decisions if their 2026 season continues heading in the wrong direction, and two of their biggest defensive names are now being mentioned as potential trade candidates. General Manager Omar Khan has already demonstrated his willingness to make significant roster changes, but the possibility of moving Jalen Ramsey or Patrick Queen would represent another major development. Steelers insider Nick Farabaugh believes both players could become realistic options if Pittsburgh's struggles reach a breaking point.

Pittsburgh entered the season with expectations of competing immediately, especially considering the veteran talent throughout its roster. However, a 2-2 start has exposed several concerns, particularly on the defensive side of the football. The Steelers have struggled to establish consistency, and the secondary has already experienced considerable turnover. If those problems continue, Khan could eventually have to evaluate whether keeping certain veterans makes sense for the organization's future.
Farabaugh recently discussed that possibility, specifically addressing whether Ramsey might become available before the NFL trade deadline in November. Although he wasn't reporting that Pittsburgh has actively shopped the veteran defensive back, he suggested the organization could be receptive to moving him under the right circumstances. Farabaugh also identified Queen as another player who could enter those conversations.
"I don't know if he would want moved, but it wouldn't surprise me," Farabaugh said. "He's forced himself out of about three different locations, so that wouldn't be new to him. I think the Steelers would be open to moving [Jalen Ramsey]. I also think they would probably be open to moving Patrick Queen... if things just truly went off the rails and they started to truly go downhill."
That's an interesting assessment because Ramsey and Queen were both brought to Pittsburgh with the expectation that they would help strengthen the defense.
Neither player was acquired to be a temporary solution. The Steelers wanted experienced defensive playmakers capable of helping the organization compete against the AFC's best teams. However, Farabaugh believes circumstances could change if Pittsburgh begins falling out of contention.
Ramsey's situation is particularly intriguing. The veteran defensive back has recently found himself at the center of multiple conversations involving Pittsburgh's secondary. He publicly defended former teammate Joey Porter Jr. while also explaining concerns about how defensive backs develop chemistry within the Steelers' system.
Ramsey later clarified that he respects Pittsburgh's coaching staff and remains committed to winning with the organization. That makes the possibility of a trade especially interesting. Ramsey has emphasized his desire to help the Steelers succeed, but Farabaugh believes his history of changing teams could make another move conceivable. Queen presents a different situation.
The veteran linebacker was expected to become an important defensive leader when Pittsburgh acquired him. However, questions about his consistency and the defense's overall performance have created additional scrutiny surrounding his role.
If Pittsburgh continues struggling, Khan could face difficult questions about the value of keeping expensive veteran contributors.
Steelers Could Face Huge Decisions Involving Ramsey And Queen
Farabaugh didn't stop at suggesting that Pittsburgh might consider moving either player. He went a step further by identifying both veterans as particularly obvious names to monitor if the organization's situation deteriorates.
"I think those two would be very easy trade candidates for the Steelers," Farabaugh said.
That statement deserves attention, but the circumstances surrounding it are important. Farabaugh wasn't suggesting the Steelers are preparing to trade Ramsey or Queen immediately. His assessment was conditional on Pittsburgh's season going seriously off the rails, which would potentially change the front office's priorities.

There is a significant difference between making roster adjustments while pursuing a playoff appearance and trading established veterans because the season has become difficult to salvage.
Khan would also have to consider what Pittsburgh could realistically receive in return. Trading a recognizable name doesn't automatically produce valuable compensation, particularly when other teams must evaluate contracts, performance and roster fit.
The Steelers would need a compelling reason to move either player. Still, Farabaugh's comments highlight how quickly the conversation surrounding Pittsburgh's defense could change. A few improved performances might eliminate much of the speculation, while another disappointing stretch could make the trade deadline increasingly interesting.
