The Pittsburgh Steelers could be preparing for a reunion that would get plenty of fans excited. Former Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster is reportedly heading back to Pittsburgh for a visit as the organization searches for help at the position. With injuries creating serious concerns around Aaron Rodgers' receiving corps, General Manager Omar Khan appears willing to explore a familiar option.

Pittsburgh enters Week 6 at 3-2 following a 34-22 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. However, the Steelers have dealt with injuries to Michael Pittman Jr., Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek, leaving the offense needing additional depth. Smith-Schuster could offer an experienced option who already understands what playing in Pittsburgh means.
According to Steelers insider Noah Strackbein, the organization is bringing Smith-Schuster in for a visit before Sunday's matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"The Pittsburgh Steelers are bringing in a familiar face for a visit before their Week 6 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers," Strackbein reported. "According to a team source, JuJu Smith-Schuster is making his way to the Steel City as they look for wide receiver help and he looks for a home during the 2026 season."
Strackbein cited a team source in reporting the development, which could eventually lead to a reunion between the two sides. The Steelers clearly recognize their need for receiving help, and Smith-Schuster now has an opportunity to make his case.
The possibility of Smith-Schuster returning to Pittsburgh is particularly interesting considering how badly the Steelers need experienced help at wide receiver. While the organization has several young players capable of contributing, adding someone who understands the expectations that come with playing in Pittsburgh could provide a much-needed boost.
Steelers Could Bring JuJu Smith-Schuster Back Home
Smith-Schuster originally joined Pittsburgh as a second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and quickly became a fan favorite. His most productive season came in 2018, when he caught 111 passes for 1,426 yards and seven touchdowns. He later helped the Kansas City Chiefs win Super Bowl LVII.

A visit does not guarantee a contract, but Pittsburgh's interest is noteworthy given its current receiving situation. Smith-Schuster would not necessarily need to become a featured target to help the Steelers. Providing Rodgers with another experienced pass catcher could be valuable as Pittsburgh navigates its injuries.
The interesting part of this potential reunion is how different the circumstances are from Smith-Schuster's first stint in Pittsburgh. He originally arrived as a young receiver playing alongside Antonio Brown and catching passes from Ben Roethlisberger. Now, he would be joining an offense led by Rodgers and Head Coach Mike McCarthy, with DK Metcalf serving as the primary receiving threat. The Steelers would not be asking Smith-Schuster to recreate his impressive 2018 campaign.
Instead, Pittsburgh could benefit from his experience working underneath coverage and finding openings against opposing defenses. Rodgers has always valued receivers who understand their assignments and can make themselves available when plays break down. That kind of reliability becomes especially important when injuries force an offense to adjust its original plans. Smith-Schuster would still need to prove he can contribute physically, but the potential fit is understandable.
Of course, fans should remember that Smith-Schuster's visit is only the beginning of the process. Pittsburgh must evaluate his current condition, determine what role he could fill and decide whether the reunion makes sense for both sides. There are rumors that his knees may be too old for the NFL.
Still, the possibility of seeing a familiar wide receiver back in black and gold is an exciting development. The Steelers clearly recognize their need for receiving help, and Smith-Schuster now has an opportunity to make his case.
