Steelers' Sneaky NFL Rule Change Has Given Omar Khan Odd Advantage

The Pittsburgh Steelers will have a big decision to make after playing the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. A victory will put the team at 6-2 and in prime position to make a push toward another AFC North championship. It also will allow the roster to go into the Week 9 bye feeling very good about itself. During this time, it should be all business for general manager Omar Khan. The trade deadline will commence on November 10th, so the front office will have a break in game action to prepare ahead of that big day. A significant move could be on the horizon.

There is a very notable advantage that the Steelers have in 2026. With the break in the schedule coming after Week 8, the entirety of Week 9 can be spent analyzing the trade market while also preparing for the Cincinnati Bengals. If Pittsburgh acts quickly after the Cleveland game and makes a move, a newcomer will have time to adjust as he joins a new locker room.

This will be particularly important if the front office acquires a wide receiver. Khan has not been shy about doing that, as he traded for Mike Williams back in 2024. The move didn't work out overall, but it just so happens that the organization had a Week 9 bye that year, too.

The move wasn't made in advance, but the executives had time to vet the market throughout the bye week. When one takes a look and dives into the details, it certainly is odd that Pittsburgh has now benefited from this quirk twice in three years.

Now, it may not be remembered by all that Art Rooney II โ€” on behalf of the franchise โ€” proposed a rule change back in 2024. The goal was to move the trade deadline back a week. Instead of occurring between Weeks 8 and 9, it would fall between Weeks 9 and 10. This was approved by owners across the NFL, and Pittsburgh has subtly been subtly a beneficiary. The league's official website detailed the reasoning back in 2024.

"The Pittsburgh Steelers have proposed moving the deadline to Week 9, while six other teams -- the Browns, Lions, Jets, Eagles, 49ers and Commanders -- have taken it a step further and are looking to shift the deadline to the Tuesday following the NFL's Week 10 games. Doing so more closely aligns with the 2021 change to a 17-game season, those clubs reasoned. A later deadline would also provide better flexibility and a larger sample size in assessing roster options at that point in the year."

Since this went into effect, the Steelers have had a bye in Week 9 twice, as mentioned. It's an odd quirk that had worked out to the team's advantage. In 2026, it has gone even a step further.

Pittsburgh is the only contender that has a break with the trade deadline coming in the very next week. In 2024, the San Francisco 49ers also had a bye, and were sitting at 4-4 with the playoffs on their mind.

Now, the Tennessee Titans are the only other franchise that will spent Week 9 at home. That front office has already shipped off a franchise cornerstone, so it will be on the opposite end of the Steelers. Rooney's rule proposal back in 2024 has given Khan a weird leg-up in two different campaigns. Last time this occurred, Pittsburgh acquired offensive and defensive help. Williams came in at wide receiver, while Preston Smith was acquired to play outside linebacker.

Steelers Have Big Opportunity With Deadline Approaching

The health of the roster along with the overall performance in Week 8 could determine what Pittsburgh decides to do. Overall, it appears that other contenders will be focusing on games, while the Steelers can solely worry about making a season-altering move. This small sample size of a coincidence isn't enough to turn into a conspiracy theory, but the franchise in the Steel City has now benefited from the rule change twice in three years.
