Day 2 has come and gone. With the first pick the Steelers got the tall, fast receiver they haven't had since Plaxico Burress. Chase Claypool was chosen with their 49th pick in the 2nd round from Notre Dame. We learned shortly afterward that both Ben Roethlisberger and JuJu Smith-Schuster reached out to welcome the new weapon to the team.
Then we had a lot of time to wait until the Steelers picked again. An interesting moment happened at the 18th pick in the 2nd round when Denver selected G/C Lloyd Cushenberry. That would have been the Steelers pick, but they traded it last year to move up and acquire Devin Bush. Still well worth losing that selection for a top 10 pick!
Then a lot of time passed and I had nothing better to do than to track Roger Goodell's behavior. His eyes got redder and redder, and by pick 85 his speech was slurred. He was killing his container of M&Ms like a dude with the munchies on 4/20. By pick 91, he was sitting in his chair looking like he was going to pass out. The commish phoned in the rest of the round, like he phoned in the investigation on the New England Patriots ,stealing signals from the Cincinnati Bengals. The booing isn't a joke Roj, we boo because we hate you, and you do not hold the Pats accountable.
Then finally, the Steelers got to pick again, and they chose an edge player from Charlotte University Alex Highsmith. Alex has a full compliment of pass rush moves to go along with his ability to tackle in the running game. He looks a bit like a Bud Dupree clone, so it will be interesting to see how he fits into the defense this year.
Steelers still have needs at offensive line, slot receiver, nose tackle, inside linebacker, and safety depth. They can go any way they want on day 3 with their last four picks. Let's hope the best player available approach continues to find talent deep into this draft.
Are you happy with the players the Steelers drafted? Who would you have drafted? Who do you want the Steelers to target on Day 3?
