The Pittsburgh Steelers had one of their more active offseasons in recent memory. Meaning a lot of players who were not up to par were cut, and the front office then signed a lot of players in free agency which is unlike Pittsburgh. One player who ended up being released was cornerback Arthur Maulet, citing that the relationship between himself and the team was ruined because the Steelers were not able to give him enough security.

Former Steelers Cornerback Explains Why He Asked To Be Released

Maulet was released by the Steelers in May of the 2023 NFL offseason, and the team was just granting his wishes by doing so. Following his release, Maulet signed a contract with an AFC North rival, the Baltimore Ravens. In a recent interview posted on the Ravens' team website, Maulet explained his decision to ask for a release and to sign with Baltimore.

"I'm a vet, year number seven, I just wanted a little something, a little security. I think I earned that. Baltimore gave me that, which was surprising that it was rivalry team. Obviously, they believe in me. That just makes me feel good about the work I put in this offseason."

Let's break that down. Maulet signed a two-year contract extension with Pittsburgh during the 2022 offseason. That contract had an average annual value of around $1.9 million and would have kept him with the team through the 2023 season.

So it would only make sense that the contract he signed with Baltimore had a higher average annual value, or was at least long-term. Maulet ended up signing just a one-year deal with the Ravens. That must mean it has a high value, right? Nope. The contract is worth just $1.08 million, less than what he would have earned with Pittsburgh. Kind of difficult to understand Maulet's logic on the whole situation.

The release of Steelers slot cornerback Arthur Maulet came a bit out of nowhere.

Now Maulet is obviously with one of the Steelers' biggest rivals in the NFL. They will play one another at least twice in the 2023 since they are divisional opponents. The first match-up will be on October 8th, in Pittsburgh, with the season finale between the two coming on January 7th in Baltimore. Maulet is looking forward to those games as he told members of the Ravens' media.

"It's circled on my calendar for sure."

Maulet will likely see a lot of playing time in the nickel for the Ravens, however he didn't play at all in the preseason due to a hamstring injury he suffered earlier. The Steelers haven't necessarily felt the loss of Maulet. They signed Patrick Peterson in free agency and he has been seen playing some at the slot corner position. While both Chandon Sullivan and Elijah Riley have each made an impact, and Head Coach Mike Tomlin has said both will see playing time in the role based on the situation.

Maulet had one interception, 106 total tackles, and two sacks in his two seasons with the Steelers. It is reasonable to think the they will be able to replace that production with Peterson, Sullivan, Riley, or even rookie Joey Porter Jr. That's not to mention the recent signing of Desmond King II as well. Around the time of which Maulet asked for his release from the Steelers, he went on a social media rampage. It seemed the goal of this was to trash the Steelers front office and the organization, but overall it was just a bad look for Maulet.

Since he made his comments on social media, and the way he has acted since signing with the Ravens, I'm sure there are a few Steelers players that are excited to face him as well. With how the offense has looked in the preseason, I wish him the best going against Kenny Pickett and the Steelers' receiving corp.
