The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation has been a major talking point this offseason. The team began by signing veteran quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year deal at the veteran minimum. Shortly after, they traded away former first-round pick Kenny Pickett. This move paved the way for a trade with the Chicago Bears to acquire Justin Fields.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin made it clear that Wilson is initially in the lead for the starting role. While Fields has the opportunity to challenge Wilson, the veteran is considered the frontrunner. However, Wilson’s progress was hampered by a calf injury that sidelined him early in training camp. This injury has provided Fields with additional chances to showcase his skills and impress the coaching staff.
Recent reports indicate that Fields has made a significant impression in Pittsburgh during Wilson's absence. As Wilson nears full health and returns to full participation in practice, the competition for the starting role remains open. Although it’s uncertain whether Fields will start during the 2024 season, he has the potential to join an elite group of dual-threat quarterbacks if given the opportunity.

Fields is just 280 rushing yards away from becoming the fourth quarterback in NFL history to accumulate 2,500 rushing yards in their first four seasons. Achieving this milestone in the 2024 season would place him among elite company, joining the ranks of Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles, and former Carolina Panthers star Cam Newton—some of the most dynamic running quarterbacks in recent memory.
When the Bears drafted Fields, they hoped he would be their franchise quarterback. While Fields has struggled as a passer, with 40 touchdowns and 30 interceptions, and a starting record of 10-28, all of the blame simply can't fall on his shoulders. He played in multiple systems with the Bears and the entire team was a real mess. He's in a better situation in Pittsburgh.

Questions remain about Fields' potential as a passer. Despite displaying moments of brilliance, his accuracy issues are reflected in his high interception count. However, there are no doubts about his prowess as a running quarterback. Fields is arguably the most dangerous running quarterback in the NFL today.
In his first three seasons, Fields has rushed for 2,220 yards, scoring 14 rushing touchdowns and averaging 6.2 yards per carry—impressive statistics. His standout season came in 2022, when he averaged 76.2 yards per game, rushed for 1,143 yards, and scored eight touchdowns, all while averaging 7.1 yards per carry.
Steelers' Justin Fields Should Thrive Playing For Arthur Smith
Although it's uncertain how much opportunity Fields will have in the regular season to reach the 2,500-yard mark, if he gets even limited chances and is utilized as a rusher, he could easily achieve this milestone and join an elite group. Steelers Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith is expected to reintroduce physicality to the offense, and some pundits believe Fields could thrive in Smith’s system.

It will be fascinating to see how many opportunities Fields gets in 2024 to become one of the select quarterbacks with 2,500 rushing yards in their first four seasons. There's no doubt about Fields' prowess in the running game. If he can improve his passing accuracy, he has the potential to be a standout player in Pittsburgh for years to come.
