Insider Hints That Steelers' Omar Khan Will Be "Going Shopping" On Cutdown Day

The Pittsburgh Steelers, like the other 31 organizations across the league, are preparing to move on from a large chunk of their offseason rosters. Team's offseason rosters have room for 90 players, while a team can only carry 53 into the regular season along with 16 on their practice squad. Cut down day will come Tuesday, but teams will start to release certain veterans and other plays in order to give them a better shot of being picked up elsewhere. Pittsburgh is an intriguing team to watch, as General Manager Omar Khan will likely look to make some additions to the roster.

Khan has been extremely intricate and careful in how he builds his roster. He is able to play the waiting game in trade talks, which was shown when acquiring Justin Fields and it is on display once again as the Steelers have had an offer on the table with the San Francisco 49ers for their star receiver Brandon Aiyuk for about three weeks.

Insiders across the league have speculated about what Khan and the Steelers will do ahead of the season, and Steelers insider Mark Kaboly expects Khan to be active.

This can mean a couple of things. It could mean he wants to add an existing free agent or that he wants to be active on the waiver wire once cut down day rolls around. It could also mean he may pursue other trades around the league.

Pittsburgh needs help at receiver, and if they are able to finish a trade with San Francisco they will be set. However, there are other deep receiver rooms in the NFL. One to watch may be the Houston Texans, as their young receiver John Metchie III is making noise, but buried on the depth chart.

Receiver is an obvious position where Pittsburgh needs help, but the group has been pleasantly surprising throughout training camp and the preseason. It still falls in the back half of the NFL when it comes to wide receiver groups, but it is no where near as bad as it is occasionally talked about.

Khan may also want to shop around at cornerback. Both for outside corner depth, and help in the slot. Pittsburgh already has questionable depth on the outside with Cory Trice Jr. and Darius Rush who each have little-to-no experience, and Trice suffered a groin injury during the preseason finale against the Detroit Lions. Joey Porter Jr. also has a minor injury that kept him out of the contest.

In the slot, Beanie Bishop Jr. seemed to begin to run away with the starting job at the beginning of training camp. Since then, he has been limited by an injury and has been on the receiving end of a few public lessons from Head Coach Mike Tomlin. Bishop didn't see the field until the second during the final preseason game as Tomlin called the rookie undeserving. Khan should be on the lookout for corners as he looks to make some additions.

Steelers' Khan Still Waiting To Hear Back From San Francisco

The 49ers have drawn out the Aiyuk-saga about as long as they possibly can and unless they want the drama to carry into the regular season, a decision should be made soon. They haven't been able to agree on a new deal with their receiver, even though it is their own fault for waiting to negotiate with him until some of the best receivers across the league got new deals.

Khan has an offer on the table and has been in contact with Aiyuk's representatives. Pittsburgh clearly wants the receiver, and he should be dealt within the coming weeks if no new deal is agreed upon. Until then, Khan will be looking to make the best roster he can with other trades and whoever is available on the waiver wire.
