The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Terrell Edmunds in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. While Edmunds never quite lived up to the high expectations of a first-round pick, he made notable contributions during his five seasons in Pittsburgh. Starting 75 games, Edmunds recorded five interceptions, five sacks, and 410 combined tackles. Though he was a solid contributor, many fans expected more from him given his draft status.

After his stint with the Steelers, Edmunds signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles before being traded to the Tennessee Titans. He began the 2024 season on the Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad, but was promoted to the active roster ahead of Week 1.

On September 10, 2024, the Steelers reunited with Edmunds, signing him off the Jaguars' practice squad. Fans are eager to see what role Edmunds will take on in his return to Pittsburgh. Steelers Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin spoke with Amanda Godsey and hinted that Edmunds could soon play a role in the defense.

During his regular Tuesday press conference, Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged how difficult it can be for players to "jump on a moving train," a challenge Edmunds is certainly facing. Despite the circumstances, Austin believes Edmunds has adapted well, quickly getting comfortable within the defense.

Although Edmunds has yet to be active in a game since rejoining the Steelers, Austin hinted that when called upon, he’ll be ready to perform. He also suggested that Steeler Nation could see Edmunds in action sooner rather than later. Currently listed as the third-string free safety on the Steelers' 2024 depth chart, Edmunds—primarily a strong safety throughout his career—has the versatility to play both positions.

The Steelers boast strong depth at the safety position, so many fans were surprised when the team decided to bring Edmunds back. However, the move makes sense given his familiarity with the Steelers' defense and his veteran experience. It’s exciting to have a former first-round talent as a depth piece. While expectations for Edmunds may be modest among fans, Austin has expressed satisfaction with his performance thus far.

Steelers' Defense Has Been Incredible Through 3 Games

The Steelers' defense has been exceptional, ranking as the best in the NFL through the first three weeks of the season. With a fast 3-0 start, their defensive unit has delivered historic performances, showcasing playmakers at every level, including safety.

In the second half of the Week 3 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Steelers were able to hold them to negative five yards. That's an insane accomplishment to hold an NFL offense to negative yards for two entire quarters. That speaks to just how great this defense has been.

While it’s unlikely that Edmunds will see significant playing time unless an injury occurs at safety, his presence provides valuable insurance for the team. The Steelers' defense aims to maintain its dominance as Edmunds seeks to regain momentum in his career. When given another opportunity, he hopes to make impactful plays that contribute to the team's success. Austin has expressed confidence in Edmunds.
