Steelers Could Soon Develop Massive Interest In Potential Wide Receiver Trade Target

The Pittsburgh Steelers' offense put up a season-high 24 points against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4, but came up short as the defense allowed 27. Questions will surround the team's quarterback situation throughout the preparation for a Week 5 contest versus the Dallas Cowboys. It's impossible for the front office and General Manager Omar Khan not to take note of the underwhelming wide receiver play so far in 2024, however. Calvin Austin III had one strong outing in Week 3, but other than that, George Pickens is the only wideout to be consistently effective, which was expected.

Pittsburgh didn't end up trading for a potential partner-in-crime for Pickens in the offseason, as Brandon Aiyuk ended up signing with the San Francisco 49ers shortly before the regular season began. As the Steelers sit at 3-1 with an improving offense, it's clear that there needs to be an upgrade to the wide receiving corps at some point if one or multiple playoff wins are in the future.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio brought some interesting talking points on Football Night In America on Sunday ahead of the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills matchup. A top pass-catcher in the league is currently injured, but could warrant interest in the coming weeks depending on how his team performs. That dynamic wideout is none other than Davante Adams.

"He's reportedly week to week with that hamstring injury suffered in practice," Florio said of Adams. "Next year, his salary spikes to 35.64 million and that points to an offseason split. We got five weeks and two days until the trade deadline arrives. Keep an ear open for chatter pointing to a possible Davante Adams trade in the next five weeks, unless the Raiders emerge as clear contenders."

There's a lot to digest there, but it's unlikely a team like the Raiders ends up being a favorite to make a run at a Super Bowl appearance by the time the trade deadline emerges. The Steelers, on the other hand, might need that extra boost on offense to jump into a brutal end-of-season stretch. It will be interesting to see if Khan is engaged in late October regarding the trade market, but even more intriguing if Adams is potentially available.

The Steelers have the cap space in 2024, and 2025 for that matter, to make a trade for Adams work, but time will tell if he is made available in the first place. If he is on the trade block, Khan will have a decision to make.

Steelers Can't Solely Rely On Pickens When It Comes To Wide Receivers

Tight ends and running backs are nice to have, especially when they can catch the ball, but it is imperative for teams in today's NFL to have dynamic wide receivers. Roman Wilson remains inactive for Pittsburgh whether it be to injury or a coach's decision, which leads one to believe that help is needed until someone like Wilson can prove otherwise.
