The Pittsburgh Steelers have started the 2024 season with a record of 3-1 and sit atop the AFC North standings entering Week 5. Conversations continue in the Steel City surrounding the quarterback position, but it is hard to deny that Justin Fields has looked the best he ever has throughout his career in the NFL. Head Coach Mike Tomlin will be put into a tricky situation once Russell Wilson is 100% healthy. The best scenario is Fields continuing his strong play and turning into the future of the franchise, but one move may be absolutely essential to solidify that idea.

Steelers fans are probably not getting their hopes up regarding the Davante Adams trade rumors. The Brandon Aiyuk saga lasted nearly the entire 2024 offseason and nothing ever came to fruition, other than him staying put and re-signing with the San Francisco 49ers. It has been reported consistently that Adams would like to be dealt to the New York Jets, but is open to landing elsewhere. It is incredibly important for the state of Pittsburgh's franchise to acquire the three-time All-Pro.

George Pickens is the only legitimate threat in the passing game for Fields to this point in the season. There have been a couple nice moments for some other pass-catchers, but nothing that really gives the fan base hope for a strong aerial attack. Bringing in Adams suddenly would give the Steelers one of the best wide receiver duos in the league, but also put Fields in a much better position to cement himself as the future of the franchise.

For the purposes of analyzing why acquiring Adams is so pivotal, assuming that General Manager Omar Khan would trade for Adams and then re-work his deal is a fair observation. Having Fields run an offense with a young star in Pickens and future Hall of Fame candidate in Adams would not just elevate his game, but allow the organization to evaluate the quarterback with an arsenal of weapons.

Steelers wide receiver George Pickens (#14) warms up on the field at Acrisure Stadium prior to a 2022 preseason game in Pittsburgh, PA.

One of the main reasons that Kenny Pickett was unable to properly be analyzed by the franchise, other than the presence of Matt Canada, was because of the lack of true star power around him. Granted, he did have Diontae Johnson and Pickens, but the offense dealt with injuries in 2023 from a skill position perspective. Now, Fields doesn't have Johnson, has a beat up offensive line, and no one to complement Pickens in the passing game.

It's extremely impressive that Fields has looked as good as he has, but without knowing his full potential, the Steelers might not be willing to give him a sizable contract in 2025. That's why an acquisition of Adams could be imperative to understanding just how good Fields can be. There's a strong chance that one, or both, of Pickens and Adams can get open on any given play.

Teams need a consistent and dynamic quarterback to win in today's NFL. The Steelers may have found a steal in Fields, who was pretty much forgotten about by the Chicago Bears after it was clear Caleb Williams would be drafted first overall in 2024. Giving him that extra weapon in Adams could make the difference in assessing if he can consistently perform at a high level. Not to mention, the team is 3-1 and needs another pass-catcher to solidify itself in the AFC playoff conversation.

Steelers Acquiring Both Adams And Fields In 2024 Could End Up Being Great Bargain

Pittsburgh will likely give the Bears a fourth-round pick for Fields if he continues to play well and start. If it takes a second-round pick for the organization to land Adams (and maybe another pick in 2026), getting a franchise quarterback and phenomenal wide receiver for that haul isn't too bad of a deal overall. If the finances work out, Khan should be all in on Adams and give the franchise a legitimate opportunity to see if Fields is the guy for now, and the future.
