The Pittsburgh Steelers have one of the most unique quarterback situations in the NFL. The room consists of a Super Bowl champion in Russell Wilson, former first-round draft pick in Justin Fields, and arguably the best third-stringer in the league in Kyle Allen. Fields has remained the starter with Wilson working back from a calf injury, but the veteran will be healthy very soon. Head Coach Mike Tomlin will have a decision to make, but it's hard to ignore the fact that Fields has played a respectable brand of football and the franchise could be looking at him as the long-term solution at the position.

Speculation has swirled around the idea of Tomlin officially naming Fields as the starter for the season. He has yet to do that due to Wilson's calf injury, but at some point, a decision is going to have to be made, and that will likely be sooner rather than later. If and when Fields is confirmed to be the preferred option, Wilson may not enjoy the idea of being a backup in what was supposed to be a career-saving season.
Wilson is on a one-year contract and has a no-trade clause, but it can be waived if he so chooses. It's not out of the question for him to request a trade if an opportunity arises somewhere in the league. Allen proved to be a reliable second option in his one play against the Dallas Cowboys when Fields was in the blue medical tent being evaluated for a concussion, so he's not a poor option behind Fields if Wilson does waive his no-trade clause.
A lot of this talk in recent weeks has been educated guesses based on the Steelers' quarterback situation, but Dan Graziano of ESPN made it clear that there is absolutely a chance that Wilson could be on the move in October.
"I don't know who the team is that would give up assets for Wilson right now, but it's certainly possible one does and that he ends up being the answer to this question," Graziano wrote.
This is interesting coming from a plugged-in NFL insider. Jeremy Fowler also noted that Wilson's one-year, veteran minimum contract is going to be looked at as attractive by teams if a need pops up elsewhere.

There's no definitive plan for the Steelers' future when it comes to the quarterback position. Fields' youth is attractive, but he hasn't done enough just yet to earn the keys to the kingdom. Wilson is also on the latter end of his career and Pittsburgh won't be looking at him as a long-term option if he can't get on the field to prove himself in the coming months.
This is why the decision from Tomlin is essential. When Wilson is completely healthy and ready to play in a regular season game as the starter, it would speak volumes about what the franchise is thinking for now and the future. If Fields ends up being the choice, Wilson could certainly want a chance to prove himself elsewhere because he might serve as a backup for the remainder of his career if he doesn't receive an opportunity to play in 2024.

Steelers Still Don't Have Clear Plan For The Most Important Position In Football
It's hard to win in today's NFL without a stud at the signal-caller position. Pittsburgh has seen some nice flashes from Fields, but no one is permanently cementing him as the organization's new franchise quarterback. It will be interesting to see how the situation plays out, but the fact of the matter is that when/if a decision is made to have Fields jump Wilson on the depth chart, the veteran may be on his way out of the Steel City.
