The Pittsburgh Steelers are in an interesting predicament as their 2025 offseason gets underway. Team President Art Rooney II told reporters on Monday that the organization needs to take the next step after a disappointing five-game losing streak to end the 2024 campaign. That stated the obvious, but the one commonality that the league's best franchises currently have is a top-tier quarterback. Since Ben Roethlisberger hung up his cleats, there hasn't been a signal-caller to stick out in the Steel City, which is a legitimate cause for concern because Skylar Thompson is the only one currently under contract for 2025.

The Steelers reached for a quarterback during the 2022 NFL Draft when University of Pittsburgh product Kenny Pickett was selected by the organization in the first round. This marriage was rather short, as he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2024 offseason. That led to Russell Wilson and Justin Fields playing with a single year on their respective deals.
No one is sure if either signal-caller will be back in 2025, but it certainly seems as if the goal is to re-sign one of them. It's anybody's guess as to which one that will be. The problem is that neither gives comfort to a fan base that is getting tired of quarterback inconsistencies. It is important to have one guy running the show, and for multiple years in most cases.
Unfortunately, if fans were beginning to already get excited about the upcoming NFL Draft, Pittsburgh would have to reach yet again for a quarterback, or simply take a flier on someone in the mid-to-late rounds. Jim Nagy, the Executive Director of the Senior Bowl, painted a dull picture of the 2025 class when it comes to signal-callers.
Jim Nagy, on 2025 QB class: “It’s certainly not last year. I don’t know if any of these guys would be in the top-6 last year.”

Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye and Bo Nix all showed flashes of being franchise guys during their rookie seasons, specifically Daniels. The group has plenty of time to change that narrative, but overall, it's expected that the 2024 class goes down as one of the better in recent memory. If the same can't be said for 2025, the Steelers might not even have interest in taking someone early on that plays the position. Picking one in a weak class could be a mistake.

There is no doubt that fans in the Steel City were spoiled for 18 years with Roethlisberger leading the way. There was a small glimpse of worry for the future when the veteran missed nearly the entire 2019 season due to injury, but he came back in 2020 to lead the team to a 11-0 start. What fans saw in 2019, however, has come back around from the 2022 season up until a disheartening Wild Card loss to the Baltimore Ravens not too long ago.
Pittsburgh needs a quarterback and there is no doubting that. Playing around with one-year contracts or older guys might not be the best move going forward. It's why the prospect of bringing Fields back to see what he has is attractive, but he still has yet to fully prove himself at the professional level. If the Steelers want a quarterback in the draft, though, the franchise might have to wait until 2026.

Steelers' Offensive Financial Approach Is Simply Not Working
It's hard to imagine that a tight end and guard are the only two offensive players in the top 10 it terms of Pittsburgh's salary cap responsibilities. For reference, the two teams competing in Super Bowl LIX, the Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, each have six offensive players in the top 10 of their respective salary caps. That's something the Steelers might need to evaluate sooner rather than later, especially if whoever is at quarterback is going to 'wow' anybody.
