The Pittsburgh Steelers need help at the wide receiver position. That statement has never been more true as the team prepares to enter a 2025 offseason that will be full of roster reconstruction. The quarterback situation remains in limbo, but it's clear that George Pickens is the only consistent and legitimate pass-catcher that the offense had in 2024. Free agency, the trade market, and 2025 NFL Draft could all be used by General Manager Omar Khan to bolster the unit. The 2024 calendar year was full of rumors regarding the Steel City and wideouts, and the fan base can expect the exact same for the foreseeable future.

Steelers wide receiver George Pickens (#14) catches a pass and gets ready to run up the field during a 2023 training camp practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.
Just prior to Super Bowl LIX, Cooper Kupp announced that the Los Angeles Rams would be pursuing a trade partner for him. That immediately sparked conversation about the Steelers, and rumors will continue each time a new pass-catcher is mentioned in any kind of light that relates to a possible trade. Another name recently brought up was Deebo Samuel, who has been connected to Pittsburgh after being granted permission by the San Francisco 49ers to seek a new home.
Steelers fans have a bad taste in their mouths when it comes to trade talks with the 49ers after months of Brandon Aiyuk speculation in 2024, but Samuel all of a sudden seems more plausible after San Francisco and him have agreed to likely part ways. Many will theorize where a destination could be for the veteran, but Gerry Dulac noted in a fan chat on Wednesday that he believes Pittsburgh will be heavily interested.
"I'm sure they are looking at it," Dulac wrote.
This is a broad statement from the reporter, but he is relatively plugged in at the organization. Dulac's reporting may not always be spot on, however, he has been around the team a long time and understands what kinds of conversations may be going on behind closed doors. Samuel, if healthy, can be a dynamic threat for any offense, and would be a significant upgrade for Pittsburgh's offense.

The idea of pairing Samuel with Pickens could make the fan base extremely excited. There have been a lot of rumors surrounding Pickens in his own right, but Dulac noted that Pickens should be around for at least the 2025 campaign.
"The likely scenario is he won't be getting his mail delivered here in 2026," Dulac wrote.
Recent reports have suggested that Samuel could only go for a day three pick, which should be looked at as a no-brainer for the Steelers. If Pittsburgh is completely sure that it can compete in the near-future, an important part to that is not tear down and rebuild, but add to the current roster at positions that need the help. Wide receiver is certainly one of those areas, and if Justin Fields ends up being the signal-caller in 2025, as many weapons as possible will be essential.
Samuel recently turned 29 years old and could provide a unique spark to the Steelers' offense. A day three pick would result in a low-risk, high-reward move that could seriously benefit an offense that needs more weapons. If the offensive line improves and rushing attack gets going, having a gadget-type player like Samuel along with Pickens could be the start of a much more formidable group.

Steelers Will Be Active In Wide Receiver Market Everywhere
It doesn't matter where wideouts may be available, fans can expect Khan to work to improve the group in Pittsburgh. Last offseason's debacle that led into the regular season was magnified when Pickens missed several games in December due to injury. A lot of options are going to be considered, and it should come across as a shock if a significant name isn't added to the depth chart in the coming months.
