The Pittsburgh Steelers' fan base has been fiercely debating the team’s quarterback situation for over a year. The discussion began when the Steelers signed Russell Wilson to a one-year deal at the veteran minimum. Shortly after, they pulled off a major trade to acquire another quarterback, Justin Fields, further fueling the debate.

Both Wilson and Fields had opportunities to prove themselves during the 2024 season. While each showed flashes of potential, they also displayed clear limitations, and neither fully secured the starting job for 2025. Many Steelers fans believe Fields is the better long-term option, given his youth, higher upside, exciting play-style, and more affordable contract.

Now, as the Steelers enter the 2025 offseason, the quarterback decision looms as the most significant of the year. Steeler Nation is eagerly awaiting word on when that choice will be made. On Friday, Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo provided new insight during The Pomp and Joe Show on 93.7 The Fan. When asked about the timeline for the Steelers’ quarterback decision, Fittipaldo gave a direct and telling response.

"I haven’t heard anything like in the last week or so on that," Fittipaldo said on the show. "I think they are very deep into those discussions now after the Senior Bowl. Once we get to the combine I think the story could break out there or shortly after because free agency begins in the middle of March… End of this month or the first week of March we will know what their decision is on quarterback."

The Steelers have been linked to several potential avenues for addressing their quarterback situation. One clear option is the 2025 NFL Draft, but in what is considered a weak quarterback class, none of the available prospects have generated much excitement among Steelers fans.

Jaxson Dart was seen as a possible quarterback worth drafting, but since the class is so weak, he has already started to climb draft boards making it a tough spot for the Steelers to take him. They would likely need to draft him way earlier than they would want to.

Meanwhile, speculation has also grown around two veteran quarterbacksAaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford—being potential targets. While both come with their own pros and cons, many Steelers fans seem strongly opposed to the idea of bringing in Rodgers. He put up decent numbers personally in 2024 with the New York Jets, but many feel like the drama isn't worth it. On top of that, he is 41 years old and didn't help the Jets win games during the 2024 campaign.

According to Fittipaldo, Steelers fans can expect clarity on the team’s quarterback decision by the end of the first week of March. Whether the Steelers move forward with Wilson, Fields, or an unexpected wildcard remains to be seen. However, at the moment, all signs point to Fields as the frontrunner. His projected market value of $6.4 million makes him the most affordable option, further strengthening his case.

Steelers' Justin Fields Did A Respectable Job In 2024

Fields performed well in his six starts for the Steelers during the 2024 season, leading the team to a respectable 4-2 record. With each game, it felt like he was steadily improving and gaining confidence in the offense. There were even rumors that Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith preferred Fields over Wilson. While that was never officially confirmed, the speculation created plenty of buzz throughout the season.

Adding to the intrigue, reports of a rocky relationship between Smith and Wilson have only fueled the belief that Fields will be the Steelers’ starter in 2025. While nothing is set in stone yet, all signs seem to be pointing in that direction. Steelers fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out who the organization is moving forward with.
