Raiders' Pete Carroll Makes Strange Comment About Steelers' Russell Wilson: "You Might Be Surprised"

The Pittsburgh Steelers added Russell Wilson and Justin Fields ahead of the 2024 season, giving both quarterbacks a chance to start and prove themselves. However, neither was able to fully secure their spot for 2025. With both quarterbacks set to become free agents, Wilson is expected to draw more money on the open market than Fields. That said, if the Steelers are looking to bring either quarterback back in 2025, they’ll have to offer more money.

When the Las Vegas Raiders made the surprising move to hire former Seattle Seahawks head coach, Pete Carroll, speculation quickly swirled about a potential reunion with his former quarterback, Wilson, with whom he won a Super Bowl. During his press conference at the scouting combine on Tuesday, Carroll’s comments only fueled that speculation.

Carroll was asked directly about his communication with Wilson regarding his upcoming free agency. He revealed that many might be surprised by the ongoing conversations he has with Wilson and other former players which includes another free agent in Bobby Wagner. While this isn't an earth-shattering admission, it certainly keeps the door open for a possible reunion between the two in the future.

"You might be surprised how much we all communicate," Carroll said. "All the guys from back in the day. We still communicate and watch each other and share stories and the whole thing. It has been really fun to watch those guys. Did you see Marshawn [Lynch] did our press conference?"

As Carroll wrapped up his press conference, he joked about his former star running back, Marshawn Lynch, asking questions during his first media session with the Raiders. With Wagner and Wilson both hitting free agency, speculation is running wild that Carroll might reunite with two of his most trusted stars from Seattle’s glory days. It’s an intriguing possibility—one that many Steelers fans would actually welcome.

Wilson did his best to step up for the city of Pittsburgh, fully investing himself in helping the Steelers break their playoff drought. Sadly he failed. Despite a lack of offensive weapons, he gave everything he had. However, as the 2024 season came to a close, several red flags emerged—ones that didn’t go unnoticed by Steeler Nation. Now, many fans are eager for the team to move on from Wilson and look toward the future.

Steelers Should Really Consider Moving On From Russell Wilson

While Wilson remains a high-character leader, his play on the field has clearly declined. He’s still a capable quarterback, as he proved during the 2024 season, but he no longer makes much sense for Pittsburgh. The Steelers don’t need an aging, less-mobile quarterback who struggles to extend plays. That style doesn’t fit the modern NFL or the direction the Steelers should be taking.

Wilson put up respectable numbers in 2024 and showed he can still play. However, when the pocket collapsed, it became evident that he’s no longer quick enough to evade pressure, and Pittsburgh’s offensive line didn’t give him enough time to let big plays develop. That’s why many Steelers fans believe the team should move on and roll with the younger, cheaper, and more dynamic option in Fields.

Ultimately, while a reunion with Carroll could be on the horizon for Wilson, the Steelers need to look toward the future. Sticking with Fields—or even exploring other options—would be the smarter move for a franchise that must prioritize mobility, playmaking, and long-term success. Carroll's comments are certainly intriguing and will undoubtedly spark debate across the football world. Many are eager to see where Wilson will land and how Carroll will shape his new roster in Las Vegas.
