Steelers' Top Wide Receiver Target Exposed As Organization Is Keeping An Eye Out

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been on the hunt for an upgrade at wide receiver for well over a year, and consistently coming up empty is arguably the biggest blemish on Omar Khan's resume. Pittsburgh was aggressive on the trade market in negotiations for a receiver during the 2024 offseason, and that should be expected again. They will evaluate all of their options at wide receiver through free agency, the trade market, and the 2025 NFL Draft to come up with some of the franchise's favorite options. However, there is already a name that is leading the way.

There are a good amount of wide receivers that are going to be available throughout the 2025 offseason, but the Steelers have their eye on the Denver Broncos. Veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton's future has been up in the air, especially before the 2024 season. He had a good year, but the team may be trying to get younger and want to part ways with the veteran -- and he would certainly be a good fit in Pittsburgh.

Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright spoke about this Thursday night during an X Spaces session hosted by the JetCastPod.

"I do believe they are keeping an eye on the Courtland Sutton situation in Denver," Allbright said. "Steelers Wide Receiver Coach Zach Azzanni knows Courtland Sutton very well. I would not be surprised if the Broncos moved on from Courtland Sutton, if he became a Steeler. They’re looking at the market, they are out there looking. The problem is this free agent crop is just not that good, and the big-name receivers that are out there come with wear and tear."

Zach Azzanni coached Sutton for five years in Denver, and the two are close. This could create a natural connection between Sutton and Pittsburgh, and that connection could grow even more if Russell Wilson somehow became the starter for the Steelers in 2025.

The way Allbright phrased his statement made it seem like Denver was considering parting ways with Sutton, and that could mean eventually releasing the talented wide receiver. His contract expires after the 2025 season, and it would not break the bank to release him. The Broncos could also attempt to trade him, but they probably wouldn't get more than a late Day 3 pick for him.

Allbright continued to speak about how the Steelers are attacking the wide receiver situation, and he even mentioned they might not be looking to trade.

"I don’t believe the Steelers want to trade for a receiver, but the DK [Metcalf]  thing, if they can convince him, that might be something they’d be willing to take a swing on," Allbright said. "But, Courtland, keep your eye on that one. If he gets let go by the Broncos, the Steelers will be the leaders in the clubhouse.”

DK Metcalf recently requested a trade from the Seattle Seahawks, and the Steelers should definitely at least inquire. Whichever organization trades for him would have to fork over significant draft capital, while also being prepared to give Metcalf around $30 million per year. That is a large commitment for the receiver, and Pittsburgh might be better off just waiting to see what the future holds for a player like Sutton.

Steelers Should Take The Opportunity To Land Sutton

Sutton has been fairly underrated ever since he entered the league in 2018, but it makes sense because Denver has not been great throughout his time there. The organization finally turned things around in 2024 and made the postseason, which makes it hard to understand why Denver could be contemplating parting ways with Sutton. The wide receiver hauled in 81 passes for over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns in 2024, and is their best consistent play-maker on offense.

The veteran probably wants a new deal as he is going into the last year of his rookie-extension, and that could create some tension between him and the organization. If Pittsburgh has a chance to trade for him, or he gets released, Khan must find a way to get him on the 2025 roster.
