Sneaky Detail In Steelers' Trade For DK Metcalf Could Land Pittsburgh Another All-Pro Wide Receiver In Last-Minute Deal

The Pittsburgh Steelers took the NFL world by storm on Sunday night when General Manager Omar Khan agreed to a trade that would bring wide receiver DK Metcalf to the Steel City. The organization has been desperate for a second pass-catcher to work alongside George Pickens, and now, that has finally become a reality. No one is quite sure what the move means for Pickens' future with the team that drafted him, but the deal absolutely makes the franchise's offense better. There should be several more moves that the front office is involved in as the new league year quickly approaches.

While it has been understood that the Steelers are sending the Seattle Seahawks a second-round pick for Metcalf, there was also another piece to the deal that was written about on the NFL's official website.

"The teams are also swapping 2025 sixth and seventh-round picks, Pelissero added."

This is extremely interesting because Pittsburgh lost its own sixth-round pick to the Chicago Bears because of the Justin Fields trade. Now, it appears as if the Steelers will get a sixth-rounder back, while passing along one of their three seventh-rounders to the Seahawks. No one should be surprised if the new six-round pick is used in a deal, and it could be something Khan uses in a trade to acquire another pass-catcher before he is officially released.

Adam Schefter of ESPN posted on X on Monday evening about Los Angeles Rams wideout Cooper Kupp. He is expected to be be released at the start of the new league year if a trade does not occur.

"Sources: Rams are planning to release WR Cooper Kupp after the start of the new league year unless a trade materializes," Schefter wrote.

Things seem to be bleak for the Rams. The clear goal is to trade Kupp, but a hefty contract is probably making that difficult. At this point, any draft compensation would suffice, and the Steelers could use the Seahawks' sixth-rounder to get a deal done. Los Angeles would likely be expected to eat a portion of the cap hit that comes along with the veteran.

It would be a pretty insane receiving corps if it included Metcalf, Pickens and Kupp, but the possibility isn't out of the question. The Steelers are focused on revamping the offense, and having weapons all over the place would be extremely helpful. That sixth-round pick could be something that gets the job done and is just enough for the Rams to deal Kupp rather than release him.

Another bonus of a potential Kupp acquisition is his veteran prowess and leadership ability. Having someone like him in the room would only help guys who tend to have their tempers flare such as Metcalf and Pickens. He might be exactly what the Steelers need to fortify the group, leaving the draft for going after defensive linemen and maybe even a running back early.

It is more likely that Kupp simply gets released instead of being traded and that is mainly because of his massive cap hits in 2025 and 2026. If Pittsburgh can land him and renegotiate his deal, or have the Rams eat some of the salary, a sixth-round pick could be what solidifies a trade. The Steelers would suddenly have one of the best receiving corps in the NFL.

Steelers Have Opportunity To Have Completely Reshaped Offense In 2025

The Metcalf trade already has improved Pittsburgh's offensive unit, but more could still be coming based on the cap space that the team has. Kupp is an extremely attractive option because of his experience and talent, but he may elect to go elsewhere if he is released by Los Angeles, and not traded. Overall, it would be pretty savvy of Khan to use the new sixth-round pick to get Kupp to the Steel City.

Do you think that the Steelers will have a chance to trade for Kupp even after acquiring Metcalf? Let us know in the comments below!
