The Pittsburgh Steelers' search for a definitive starting quarterback has been a subject of intense speculation and relentless rumors, with the name of veteran signal-caller Aaron Rodgers consistently dominating the conversation. Rodgers, whose decision-making process continues to unfold, has become a focal point of discussion for both fans and analysts. The news of Rodgers' visit to the Steelers' training facility has sparked significant attention, further increasing the anticipation surrounding his potential arrival. However, the Steelers' reported insistence on offering only a one-year contract raises questions about the long-term nature of this approach. While a one-year deal might provide a temporary solution to their immediate quarterback needs, it ultimately fails to address the Steelers' overarching objective: to identify the next franchise quarterback following the legendary Ben Roethlisberger, a quarterback who anchored the franchise for nearly two decades.

The reports suggesting the Steelers are only willing to offer a one-year contract to veteran quarterbacks, including Rodgers, serve as compelling evidence of their overarching strategy: to secure a long-term solution at the quarterback position through the NFL Draft, either in the upcoming draft or the following year. This strategic approach emphasizes the Steelers' determination to identify and develop their next franchise quarterback, a player capable of leading the team for an extended period. The Steelers' need to look for a new quarterback stems from their recent experience with Kenny Pickett, whose time with the team did not create the desired results. Pickett, initially envisioned as the Steelers' quarterback of the future, now finds himself with the Cleveland Browns after being released prior to the beginning of last season.

The 2025 NFL Draft presents analysts and scouts with a differences of opinions on the overall strength and depth of the quarterback pool. For the Steelers, their draft position at the 21st overall pick presents a unique challenge. This placement means they will inevitably miss out on the quarterbacks widely considered to be the top prospects in the class, those projected to be selected early.

However, this does not preclude the Steelers from identifying and securing a quarterback who could potentially develop into their franchise cornerstone. While the top-tier quarterbacks may be off the board, there remain a number of intriguing prospects who could fit the Steelers' needs. Among the names being discussed as potential Steelers targets are Jaxson Dart, Will Howard, and Jalen Milroe. Despite the optimism surrounding these potential selections, there remains a degree of skepticism among some observers. These individuals have doubts about the long-term viability of the quarterbacks available at the Steelers' draft position, questioning whether some of them possess the skills to become a true franchise quarterback.

Mike Bergin, the host of the Bleav In Steelers podcast, recently appeared as a guest on "The Arthur Moats Experience," hosted by former Steelers linebacker Arthur Moats. The two discussed the Steelers' ongoing quarterback situation. A portion of their conversation centered on the potential quarterback prospects available in the upcoming NFL Draft, with both Bergin and Moats offering their insights and evaluations. Specifically, the discussion turned to Milroe, a quarterback who has generated considerable interest among Steelers fans and analysts. During this segment of the podcast, Bergin shared his unique perspective and analysis regarding Milroe's potential fit with the Steelers and the league.

"Did we see him actually play football this last year?" Bergin asked.

Bergin did express a level of skepticism regarding the draft prospect's readiness for the NFL, effectively "throwing some shade" on his potential. Bergin emphasized that his assessment wasn't a personal attack, but rather a reflection of genuine concerns stemming from Milroe's performance during the previous collegiate season. Notably, Milroe's statistics against SEC opponents revealed a concerning disparity: five touchdown passes combined with ten interceptions.

Bergin acknowledged the factor of a potentially limited receiving corps, but he emphasized the fundamental principle that exceptional athleticism alone does not guarantee success at the quarterback position. He elaborated that Milroe's potential for success would be contingent upon landing with a team that has specific attributes. These attributes include a robust quarterback development program, a complementary offensive personnel, a solid current roster, and a strong organizational infrastructure.

Would The Steelers Be A Good Fit For Milroe?

Every selection made in the NFL Draft inherently involves a degree of calculated risk. While Milroe's exceptional athleticism represents a significant positive attribute, it's crucial to acknowledge the uncertainties associated with any draft prospect. The Steelers, however, have demonstrated an interest in Milroe, shown by their attendance at his pro day and their dinner meeting with the player.

The Steelers' potential acquisition of a veteran quarterback would also serve as a telling indication of their intentions regarding Milroe's development. A crucial factor in Milroe's success would be the quality of mentorship he receives. The Steelers' actions suggest they are considering a multi-faceted approach, balancing the potential of a rookie with the stability of a veteran presence.
