Steelers Accused Of Only Having Interest In Aaron Rodgers To Simply Win Just 1 Playoff Game In 2025

The Pittsburgh Steelers are stuck in a weird cycle that has not occurred throughout the 21st century. The team has no playoff wins since the 2016 season, but Head Coach Mike Tomlin is said to, technically, have a lifetime contract. Things for the organization have gone especially wrong since Ben Roethlisberger retired at the end of the 2021 campaign. The quarterback position has been an issue ever since, and there appears to be no long-term answer just yet as most expect a 41-year-old in Aaron Rodgers to run the show in 2025. The future Hall of Famer is taking his time making a decision, however.

Tomlin seems completely allergic to finishing any season under .500, which makes many believe that the signal-caller position doesn't really matter when it comes to having a chance at making the playoffs once December rolls around. While Roethlisberger was in charge of the offense for the majority of Tomlin's tenure, he deserves some credit because of the teams that have finished above. 500 in recent years.

The city, however, sees it much differently and is desperate for some postseason success. Some outside the Steel City may think that the desire to sign Rodgers has something to do with the belief that his presence could elevate the organization to becoming a Super Bowl contender once again. Not everyone believes that though.

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette hosted a fan chat on Wednesday and took a bunch of questions from individuals looking for answers. One asked if the team truly believes it can compete for a championship right now, or if Rodgers is simply being looked at as a bridge quarterback to hopefully end the playoff win drought. The insider agreed with the latter, citing very simply that the intentions are to use a one-year rental in Rodgers to win a Wild Card game.

"That's exactly what it is," Dulac wrote.

It's hard to sense sarcasm via written words, but Dulac is typically very clear when he is joking around. This was not that. The AFC is stacked with quarterback-run organizations that know each and every year that they have a chance. The Steelers are currently not set up that way, but just so happen to be Rodgers' only option currently. The front office and coaching staff could just be looking to relieve some pressure.

A proud franchise such as the Steelers should be looking to compete for Super Bowls year-in and year-out, but it seems as if the standard through the vision of the national media is finishing with at least nine wins. Dulac is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the team, but his simple words can be looked at as concerning. Stress and some pressure can make any professional go the extra mile to relieve worry, which is why it makes sense to bring Rodgers in.

The quarterback may be at the very end of his career, but he has a full 2025 offseason to make sure he is in terrific shape both physically and mentally. After nearly a decade, it's quite possible that the fan base would accept a season that led to another playoff appearance, but this time, with a win. Mediocrity is not accepted in the Steel City, which is why some may take Dulac's response in a negative way.

Steelers' Quarterback Purgatory Will Likely Continue For At Least 1 More Year

Dulac mentioned in his chat on Wednesday that this should be the final year on one-year deals for starting quarterbacks. The 2026 draft class is expected to be stacked with talent, which is why the team may hold off on drafting one in 2025. Overall, Pittsburgh is trying to just barely get over the hump. If the goal is to win a playoff game and satisfy the fan base, rather than win a Super Bowl, a lot has changed in the Steel City.
