All eyes are on the Pittsburgh Steelers as they continue to search for answers at the quarterback position. The lack of a clear starter has kept the team in the media spotlight, with analysts and fans alike sharing their opinions on what the Steelers should do next. Adding to the heat is the growing speculation that Pittsburgh is a front-runner to land veteran free agent Aaron Rodgers, a move that has already created plenty of controversy and debate within the organization and beyond.

Steelers Insider Gerry Dulac recently appeared on the Randy Baumann and the DVE Morning Show, where he discussed all things Steelers, but most notably the quarterback situation, and the ongoing speculation around Rodgers.

As time goes on and uncertainty lingers, more attention is being given to potential backup plans if Rodgers chooses not to sign. During the interview, Dulac offered his thoughts based on his sources and what he thinks the direction the Steelers should take if that scenario becomes a reality.

"I've been told if it's not Aaron Rodgers, they will find a veteran quarterback to back up Mason Rudolph," Dulac said.

Mason Rudolph continues to draw mixed opinions from fans and analysts alike. Reports indicate that if the regular season began today, he would be the Steelers’ starting quarterback. After spending a year with the Tennessee Titans, Rudolph returned to Pittsburgh this offseason, initially expected to serve as a backup.

Throughout his time with the Steelers, he has stepped in during key moments and helped lead the team to victory. Still, questions remain about whether he can consistently lead the team over the course of a full season.

Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph has traveled a rocky road in Pittsburgh.

Amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding Rodgers and the lingering doubts about Rudolph’s capabilities, the Steelers have been connected to several quarterback options this offseason.

However, with the Rodgers situation dragging on for months, many of the rumored targets for Pittsburgh have already been signed by other teams, narrowing the pool of available talent. At the same time, Rodgers' options are also dwindling, as the Steelers remain one of the few teams without a clear plan at the quarterback position.

As offseason programs get underway with no official word from Rodgers, Rudolph continues to receive increased reps and valuable opportunities. Speaking to the media during these sessions, Rudolph acknowledged that a fourth quarterback is expected to be added to the depth chart, but emphasized that he's making the most of every chance he gets.

Interestingly, both Rudolph and Rodgers seem to have support from teammates, adding another layer to the situation. While it’s unlikely that Rudolph would beat out Rodgers if he signs, his focus and determination during these offseason programs certainly shouldn't be overlooked.

It’s not secret that Rodgers brings a wealth of experience and has had a Hall of Fame worthy career. While his time with the New York Jets included some underwhelming seasons, his time with the Green Bay Packers was legendary.

That said, Rodgers is clearly not a long-term solution at quarterback. At this point of his career, it seems he’s looking to close out his career on a high note. As the oldest active player in the league, he would be a bridge quarterback, someone the Steelers could rely on for his veteran presence while they continue searching for their future franchise leader.

The Steelers' Future Franchise Quarterback Will Likely Come From An NFL Draft

Given the uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position, the Steelers were connected to several quarterback prospects in the lead up to the 2025 NFL Draft. Many expected the team to prioritize the position early on.

While the Steelers did ultimately select a quarterback, they waited until the final day, and specifically the last round, to draft Will Howard from Ohio State University. Because Howard was taken so late, some have expressed doubts about his potential to develop into the team's next franchise quarterback.

The 2026 NFL Draft is set to take place in Pittsburgh, adding extra excitement and attention for the Steelers. With the team accumulating draft capital through trades and potential compensatory picks, they’ll be well-positioned to make a major move if they choose to. Additionally, next year’s quarterback class is already being regarded as stronger, which adds another layer of interest to how the Steelers might approach the draft in their own backyard.
