Steelers Get Conclusive Answer On Wide Receiver Situation

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a similar situation compared to the 2024 NFL season: no obvious candidates for WR2 on the team. They did make an upgrade by trading for DK Metcalf to replace George Pickens, but Pittsburgh is in the middle of its Organized Team Activities (OTAs) without another viable starter on the outside. June is usually not the best time to find a player that is expected to start all 17 games for a team, but that's seemingly what the Steelers might be looking for currently.

The Steelers are scheduled to bring in Gabe Davis for a visit, but that may be just to see what he has left in the tank. In his one year with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024, Davis had 20 receptions for 239 yards in 10 games. Two receptions per game is on par with what Pittsburgh has gotten out of previous WR2s in recent years, as opposed to what they're actually looking for.

During his weekly Q&A chat, Gerry Dulac was asked about when a deal for a receiver would get done, whether it's Davis or someone else. His answer was very short, straight, and to the point about the whole situation.

"No hurry," Dulac said.

With mandatory minicamp being just around the corner, it seems like the Steelers will roll with Metcalf on one side and a rotation of Calvin Austin III and Robert Woods on the other side. Austin did have a decent 2024 campaign, and if he can build off of that, maybe he can take over as a starter throughout the season, as opposed to having another past-his-prime veteran getting starts without a lot of production.

Either way, the Steelers need some sort of production from the receiver position if they want to finally get a playoff win. Having one deep threat and a random assortment of other players is not the key to success. However, Pittsburgh may have a plan up their sleeve in the coming days.

Steelers' New Quarterback Could Dictate Receiver Targets

Of course, Aaron Rodgers has finally decided that he wants to be a Steeler, and he will put pen to paper to make it official. Because of that, the front office will likely be more motivated to look for another target to add to this offense. They probably won't look at just any receiver target though. They may have one player in mind for Rodgers.

To make the 41-year-old feel more comfortable, they might want to trade for Allen Lazard. He had 530 yards in 12 games in 2024, but he still knows how Rodgers works, so that is the possible scenario. Analysts and fans everywhere have already envisioned the connection. In the end, everything circles back to what Dulac said: there is currently no hurry to bring in another wideout.

Rodgers himself has said and proven multiple times that he is in no hurry to join a team yet, but he will be ready for Mandatory Minicamp. Now that the Steelers know who their starting quarterback will be, they may be more willing to pick up the pace in the search for a WR. Rodgers and Mason Rudolph do play the position in different ways, so it makes sense to find a receiver that fits Rodgers' style

There are still a handful of receivers on the open market that the Steelers could target if needed. Now that Pittsburgh finally got its guy, the flood gates will be open. Pittsburgh will likely be checking out every option available to them now that they know who will be throwing the ball in 2025.
