The Pittsburgh Steelers have experienced a chaotic offseason, with major changes to their roster. Earlier this offseason, the Steelers completely overhauled its quarterback room, a move that sparked widespread discussion and debate throughout the media. For a while, there was a noticeable void at the quarterback position, leaving fans and analysts speculating about who would ultimately take the reins.

While veteran and future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers is now set to be the starting quarterback for the Steelers this season, many fans are equally excited about the team’s rookie quarterback, Will Howard. Among those expressing enthusiasm for Howard is none other than Steelers legend, Ben Roethlisberger. On a recent episode of his podcast, Footbahlin With Ben Roethlisberger, the longtime Pittsburgh quarterback took time to share his thoughts on the rookie. Roethlisberger praised Howard’s playing style, poise, and overall mindset, highlighting the qualities that could make him a valuable part of the Steelers’ future.

"The reason I like him is when he goes and loses the first game at [University of] Oregon... he lost the game. He knows he lost the game," Roethlisberger said. "He bounces back and blows them out in the Rose Bowl and then wins a National Championship. There's something to be said about that."

One of the primary concerns surrounding Howard is his draft position, as he was selected in the sixth round on the final day of the 2025 NFL Draft. Being a late-round pick naturally raises questions about his potential role and long-term impact in the professional league. Many wonder whether he’ll be seen simply as a backup quarterback, or potentially have a chance at becoming a starter.

Being drafted late doesn't automatically define a player's career, however. While it's not common, there have been numerous examples of late-round picks achieving great success in the NFL. Howard’s journey may be more challenging, but it certainly doesn’t rule out the possibility of a significant role in the future. Roethlisberger’s comments reflect that situation as well. Just because Howard was drafted in the later rounds, doesn’t mean he lacks talent or motivation. On the contrary, Howard has already shared his excitement about the opportunity to learn from a seasoned veteran like Rodgers. Having someone of Rodgers' caliber to mentor him is a huge advantage for Howard in the early stages of his NFL career. Sitting behind a quarterback who has experienced loads of success, winning championships and performing at at the highest level, gives Howard a valuable chance to grow, develop his skills, and have a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed in the league.

This moment serves as a reflection of Howard’s heart and determination, qualities that Roethlisberger made a point to highlight during his podcast. After discussing Howard’s competitive drive and focused mindset, Roethlisberger went on to praise the rookie quarterback for a trait he personally values highly. As someone who has spent nearly two decades leading a team in the NFL, Roethlisberger understands the intangible qualities that can set a quarterback apart.

"I've always said... give me a guy with more heart and less talent, than a guy with more talent and less heart," Roethlisberger explained. "And Will appears to be a guy that has a lot of heart and he wants to be out there."

This is high praise, especially coming from a Steelers legend like Roethlisberger. It’s Howard’s heart, grit, and determination that are sparking the excitement among fans about his potential. While it’s unlikely that Howard will see the field at all during his rookie season, this time is still incredibly important for his development. These early months give him the chance to build a strong foundation, learn the Steelers’ playbook, build chemistry with teammates, and learn the expectations of playing at the professional level. If an opportunity does come up down the line, Howard will be better prepared to step in with confidence and purpose.

Steelers May Not Be Done Looking For Quarterbacks

While the Steelers’ drafting of Howard dominated headlines in late April, it remains uncertain if that move represents the long-term future of the franchise. It’s no secret that Rodgers, as the oldest active player in the NFL, is not the team’s long-term solution at quarterback. Meanwhile, reports have surfaced indicating the Steelers are also eyeing the quarterback class in the 2026 NFL Draft, suggesting they’re keeping their options open. Ultimately, only time will reveal who will emerge as the true leader and face of the Steelers’ franchise in the years ahead.
