The Pittsburgh Steelers have had an eventful offseason, with several major roster changes and big moves. The media has been filled with conversations about how these changes could shape the team’s performance, especially in the AFC North, widely known as one of the toughest and most competitive divisions in the NFL. While much of the focus has been on the new additions and the future potential of the team, the start of offseason programs has also prompted some reflection.

Recently, Steelers Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin addressed the media, using the opportunity to reflect openly on the team's performance last season. In particular, he took full responsibility for the team’s struggles in two key matchups against their AFC North rival, the Baltimore Ravens. His comments show a want to not only to correct past mistakes but also to set a tone of growth and leadership heading into the new season.

The Steelers went against the Ravens three times last season, twice during the regular season and once in the opening round of the playoffs. While Pittsburgh came out on top in the first regular season meeting, they fell short in the next two, including a tough postseason loss that ultimately ended their season.
The outcome of that playoff game was frustrating for both the team and fans, but it’s somewhat encouraging to see Austin take accountability and use the experience as a learning opportunity heading into the new season. One thing is certain: the Steelers will once again face their AFC North rivals at least twice this year, and they’ll be looking to change the narrative.

The Steelers have been especially active this offseason, making some bold decisions that include parting ways with last season’s leaders in passing, rushing, and receiving yards. These significant roster shakeups signal a clear shift in direction as the team looks to reshape its identity and build a more dynamic, competitive squad. In a division as fiercely competitive as the AFC North, where every team is making aggressive moves to improve, it’s absolutely essential to stay ahead of the curve.
However, in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Steelers appeared to focus their efforts on reinforcing the defensive side of the ball. Due to the trade that brought in star wide receiver DK Metcalf, the team didn’t have a second-round pick, which placed even greater importance on their first-round selection. With that crucial pick, the Steelers chose to invest in their defensive front, selecting standout defensive lineman Derrick Harmon, a move that highlights their commitment to strengthening the foundation of their defense.
Out of their seven total selections in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Steelers used five picks to strengthen the defensive side of the ball. While the team already has a solid defensive line, it’s no secret that it’s aging, making this draft a smart investment in the future. Even the defensive picks that weren’t focused on the line contribute to the overall goal of strengthening the unit as a whole. The Steelers are clearly aiming to elevate their defense to keep pace with some of the league’s top offenses, especially those within the AFC North, where offensive firepower is abundant and competition is really strong.

Steelers Are Also Working From The Inside
Contract negotiations are currently underway between the Steelers and their star edge rusher, TJ Watt. However, reports suggest that the talks have hit some roadblocks, with financial terms being a major sticking point. A key factor complicating the situation is the recent contract signed by Myles Garrett, edge rusher for AFC North rival Cleveland Browns. Garrett’s deal has set a new benchmark for defensive player salaries, which has undoubtedly influenced Watt’s value and expectations. As a result, the Steelers are now facing a challenging negotiation process as they work to keep one of their most important defensive leaders.
