The Pittsburgh Steelers have undergone numerous roster changes throughout the offseason. These moves have sparked significant conversation, drawing widespread attention. The spotlight has now turned to several of the team’s new additions. With increased media presence at workouts and practices earlier this month, these newcomers are getting their first real opportunity to showcase their talent and demonstrate the potential value they could bring to the roster in the upcoming season.

Recently, Steelers Insider Mark Kaboly appeared on 93.7 The Fan to share his insights and discuss everything related to the Steelers. During the conversation, the team’s running back room came up, and one particular name stood out. That player was rookie running back Kaleb Johnson. Kaboly spoke highly of Johnson, expressing nothing but positive things to say about the rookie’s abilities and the strong first impressions he has made within the organization so far.
"He looks like a star in the making," Kaboly said.
Fans have been expressing a great deal of excitement and anticipation about Johnson. He was chosen by the Steelers in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, which adds to the conversations surrounding his potential impact. Known for his explosiveness and dynamic playing style, Johnson has quickly made fans eager to see him step in and help address the gap that currently exists in the team’s running back room, bringing fresh energy and playmaking ability to the position moving forward.
The gap in the Steelers’ running back room is because of the departure of Najee Harris, the team’s starting running back since 2021. During his time with Pittsburgh, Harris rushed for at least 1,000 yards in each season he played. However, despite his solid production, the Steelers made the decision not to exercise his fifth-year option on his contract. This decision ultimately allowed Harris to become a free agent, and he chose to sign with the Los Angeles Chargers during this offseason.

Kaboly went on to further discuss Johnson’s potential to help fill the void left in the Steelers’ running back room. While the departure of Harris created a clear gap, the Steelers aren't completely left without options. They still have Jaylen Warren, a promising young running back who is expected to see increased opportunities now that Harris is no longer on the roster. Warren is projected to start the season as the primary ball carrier, leading the team in carries early on. However, Kaboly expressed the belief that this situation might be temporary, suggesting that Johnson’s presence and talent could soon shake up the backfield dynamics as the season progresses.
"He's totally different than Najee Harris, and I think he'll make a good complement to Jaylen Warren out of the gate, but I think eventually he's [Johnson] gonna take over," Kaboly said. "I think he can do just about everything."
This is exciting to hear for Steeler Nation, especially when considering the long-term outlook for the franchise. Having a young, talented player like Johnson on the roster means there is significant potential for him to make a lasting impact on the team’s offense for many years to come. His youth not only brings immediate energy and skill, but also offers the possibility of continued contribution, helping to shape the future and success of the Steelers’ offense for the coming seasons.
