The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a number of impactful roster changes during this offseason, sparking conversations across the league. Whether it’s talented rookies looking to earn a spot, or newly acquired veterans learning the Steelers’ system, the spotlight is on this new group of players. Everyone is eager to see how these roster moves will impact the team’s performance heading into the upcoming season.

The most talked about acquisition for the Steelers this offseason was undoubtedly veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, whose arrival brings a wealth of experience to the team’s offense. However, the question of who will emerge as the reliable second wide receiver for Rodgers behind DK Metcalf remains. This topic was recently discussed by Steelers Insider Ray Fittipaldo during an appearance on the North Shore Drive podcast, where they talked all things Steelers. When speaking about the uncertainty surrounding the team’s wide receiver depth chart, particularly the role of wide receiver two (WR2), Fittipaldo pointed to a name already within the organization, someone who could fit really well with Rodgers.
"I don't want to say he's strictly a niche player, but I think he's going to be stronger in those intermediate and those deeper routes where he's running across formation... I think Aaron Rodgers is really good at that," Fittipaldo said. "Might be a really good fit for Calvin Austin."
For several years now, the Steelers have been looking for a reliable second wide receiver. Despite various attempts through the draft and free agency, filling that void has been tough. However, one of the Steelers’ first major moves of the offseason was the acquisition of Metcalf through a trade. Metcalf’s arrival marked a big change in the team’s receiving corps, bringing proven talent, size, and explosive playmaking ability to the offense.

However, following the unexpected trade of George Pickens earlier this offseason, means the void at the wide receiver position has once again resurfaced. This has sparked a lot of discussions, as both fans and analysts are actively thinking of different options. People are looking at current players already on the roster, as well as externally, wondering if the team might pursue additional signings or trades to strengthen the receiving room before the start of the season.
The Steelers have invested valuable draft capital in a few of the receivers currently on the roster, so it’s only natural to assume that the team will first look internally to evaluate the talent they already have. This situation has become even more intriguing with the recent signing of Rodgers and the start of minicamp activities. For wide receiver Calvin Austin III, his skill set didn’t quite mesh fully with previous quarterback's playing styles in Pittsburgh. However, if he can develop strong chemistry with Rodgers, who has a track record of maximizing the potential of receivers who play like Austin, his production could see a dramatic increase. This new pairing has the potential to unlock a level of performance that fans haven’t seen from him yet.
Steelers Are Building For The Future
The Steelers have made multiple moves this offseason that clearly indicate their focus is on building for the future. One of the most telling examples of this was the trade of Pickens in exchange for future draft picks. By moving on from one of their most talented young playmakers, the Steelers signaled a willingness to prioritize long-term plans. What made this move even more notable was its timing, as it came shortly after the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft, where the Steelers chose not to select a single wide receiver. This combination of actions strongly suggests that the organization is playing the long game, stockpiling future assets and showing confidence in the development of their current roster, rather than making immediate moves to fill holes in the lineup.

Ultimately, only time will tell, especially with reports suggesting that the Steelers are still actively exploring options to add another wide receiver to the roster.
