The Pittsburgh Steelers currently find themselves lacking depth in the wide receiver room. Consisting of DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin lll, Roman Wilson and Robert Woods, Pittsburgh is widely expected to evaluate the market in hopes of adding a true wide receiver two to the team's roster. Metcalf, who was acquired earlier in the 2025 offseason in a deal with the Seattle Seahawks, is expected to play a major role on the Steelers' offense in 2025 and should be a major beneficiary of having four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback.

As the Steelers currently find no true wide receiver two at their disposal behind Metcalf, Pittsburgh has been involved in rumors surrounding multiple free-agent receivers who still find themselves without a team.

Austin continues to emerge as a legitimate second option as well, as the former Memphis Tiger has reportedly looked very sharp throughout the offseason. With speculation surrounding the Steelers' wide receiver room continuing to rise, NFL analyst Ray Fittipaldo took a moment to share his thoughts as to what he thinks Pittsburgh should do at the position.

"I think they are going to do everything in their power to investigate that and try to acquire another guy." Fittipaldo stated. "Because it doesn't have to be a number two guy, it could be just another depth player or someone that could help fill out the rotation."

Fittipaldo then went on to mention that this may be the best case scenario for Pittsburgh, emphasizing how crucial adding receiver depth may be moving forward.

"They still might be a better football team if they actually don't go out and get a legit number two. People were shooting high, I get it, but it may not be a big name. If they don't do that, then it's going to be interesting."

With the start of training camp remaining over a month away, the Steelers are expected to take their time and evaluate all options currently available to them. With multiple solid receivers remaining available in free agency, the Steelers may pursue a veteran option in hopes of further developing both Austin and Wilson.

With Rodgers officially in Pittsburgh as the starting quarterback entering week 1, the Steelers are expected to come to a decision at wide receiver within the upcoming weeks. Rodgers, who is more than likely entering the final season of his career, is a player that is far past his prime but is still expected to play a major role on the Steelers' offense in 2025.

Rodgers may aid in drawing interest from free agent wide receivers as well, as the future Hall of Fame quarterback is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time. With Rodgers officially being in Pittsburgh, the veteran is expected to continue further developing his relationship with the rest of the Steelers offense throughout the course of camp.

Steelers' Austin and Wilson Continue To Battle For Team's Second Wide Receiver Slot

As rumors continue to circulate all throughout the free agency market, the Steelers find themselves with two rising stars who are ready to make an impact in 2025. Wilson, a third round pick in 2024, is expected to finally showcase his potential after multiple injuries kept the young receiver sidelined for the majority of his rookie year.

Wilson has reportedly shown major signs of improvement throughout the offseason, and may emerge as a secondary option behind Metcalf prior to the start of training camp.

Austin, who reportedly has played at an elite level throughout mini camp, is a rising star who is expected to open the season as Pittsburgh's wide receiver two (WR2). Originally a walk-on at Memphis, Austin is a fast and explosive playmaker who should find no problem working across Metcalf. Austin is in the final year of his rookie deal as well, as the rising star finds himself entering one of the most crucial points of his young NFL career.

As the Steelers continue to evaluate both Wilson and Austin the team will reportedly still show interest in multiple receivers on the free agency market. While Pittsburgh is still expected to add depth, the team is more than likely not interested in a true wide receiver two (WR2) with the sudden emergence of Austin. As Pittsburgh continues gearing up towards the start of training camp, fans may want to monitor Pittsburgh's activity on the free agency market over the upcoming weeks.
