The Pittsburgh Steelers have found themselves at the center of discussions and controversy throughout this offseason. They've made a lot of big moves that have completely changed the look of their roster. Among all the decisions made, none have sparked more conversation, debate, and criticism than the acquisition of veteran quarterback, Aaron Rodgers.

His arrival has become one of the most talked about situations, sparking a wide range of reactions from everyone. Most recently, former Baltimore Ravens defender and current ESPN analyst, Chris Canty weighed in on the situation during an episode of Unsportsmanlike on ESPN. Canty expressed concerns, suggesting that Rodgers doesn’t appear to be fully committed to the team and questioned whether his motivations align with the Steelers’ goals.
"It is the definition of self-serving with the timing of Aaron Rodgers doing this," Canty said. "Everything we heard him say on The [Pat] McAfee Show had nothing to do with helping the Pittsburgh Steelers compete for a championship. It all had to do with him saying he wants to come back for the love of the game."
Canty was referring to Rodgers’ recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, which was his first appearance as a member of the Steelers. During the interview, Rodgers revealed that this will likely be his final season in the NFL. This announcement didn’t come as a surprise to many, given that the Steelers signed Rodgers to only a one-year deal and he’s currently the oldest active player in the league at 41.

Canty went on to further explain the reasoning behind his critical view of Rodgers. He emphasized the importance of embracing the team-first mentality, especially with training camp approaching next month. He expressed concern with Rodgers’ motivations, that his recent comments seemed more personal than team-oriented, which he believes could have a negative impact on the Steelers’ ability to perform at the highest level.
"There's a lot of sacrifices that have to be made in order to put yourself, put your team in position to contend at the highest levels. And Aaron Rodgers hasn't done any of that this offseason," Canty said. "At least with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the way he's talking, it don't sound like he's going to do that with his summer break before training camp."
This is interesting because recently, Rodgers has been receiving quite a bit of praise for his leadership, especially in regard to his comments about mentoring rookie quarterback Will Howard. Rodgers has openly expressed that he looks forward to helping mentor and develop Howard throughout the season. However, this contrasts with some of the criticism Rodgers has faced in the past. There have been reports and rumors suggesting that he was sometimes seen as a bad teammate, accused of putting his own interests ahead of the team’s needs. This is surprisingly similar to the concerns that Canty has raised.

The quarterback is often viewed as the leader of the offense, serving as a representative for the entire team both on and off the field. Because of this key role, the quarterback's attitude, work ethic, and leadership style can have a domino effect, not just on the rest of the offense, but on the overall team. If there are concerns about his commitment or team-first mentality, it can create tension or doubt within the locker room. That’s why Rodgers’ actions and mindset are under such close scrutiny and why some people are voicing concerns about his impact heading into the season.
The Steelers Look Ahead
Despite all the attention surrounding Rodgers this offseason, it's clear that he is not the long-term solution for the Steelers. With Rodgers likely retiring at the end of the season and only signing a one-year deal with the team, the focus is already starting to shift toward the future. Reports have surfaced that the Steelers have been keeping a close eye on next year’s quarterback class, which is expected to be strong. In addition to scouting talent, the Steelers have also reportedly been accumulating draft capital, potentially to position themselves for a big move in the 2026 NFL Draft. This suggests that while Rodgers may be the present, the organization is actively planning for its future franchise quarterback.
