Bill Cowher Shares Big Concern After Steelers' Recent Moves

The Pittsburgh Steelers have absolutely refused to stay out of the sports news cycle throughout the 2025 offseason. There have been several trades and moves that General Manager Omar Khan has been a part of, leading to a fairly new-looking roster. The offense has added players like Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf, Jonnu Smith, and Kaleb Johnson, among others, while the defense welcomed Jalen Ramsey in a shocking trade with the Miami Dolphins, which led to Minkah Fitzpatrick's departure. There has been a lot to keep track of, but there's no doubt that the team is doing everything it can to compete in a tough AFC North division.

Steelers fans have not had an offseason with this much activity maybe ever, leading to plenty of criticism and praise alike. There is a lot of new personnel on the team, which provides a good deal of excitement, but that doesn't always mean the result will be what some expect. With the NFL's regular season roughly two months away, Head Coach Mike Tomlin doesn't have too much time to get everyone on the same page.

Prior to Tomlin, Bill Cowher was the head coach in Pittsburgh for 15 seasons. He knows what it's like to be in several different locker rooms as each year passes. The personality of a group can change quickly with some contributors departing and others arriving. The Super Bowl-winning Hall of Famer joined The Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday, and did express a little bit of worry for the current situation.

"I think they've done a lot of good things," Cowher said. "I think the biggest thing right now is going out there and trying to bring this whole thing together. A lot of change in terms of the faces on this team. That doesn't happen overnight; it takes time. Communication has to take place. You have to create some kind of continuity with what you're trying to do on both sides of the ball."

Cowher is correct when he says that everything is going to have to come together. With the amount of new faces in the locker room, everyone needs to get on the same page. He mentioned that it would take some time, which is something the Steelers don't have a lot of. Sure, it's better that several blockbuster trades all occurred before July, but the new group will not be together in a formal environment until training camp practices begin on July 24th.

It will be interesting to see how the new collective works together. A lot of the new faces aren't just regular players. Rodgers, Metcalf, Ramsey and Smith are all proven NFL talents. It will be Tomlin's job to get everyone on the same page, but Cowher's comments highlight the very important fact that it might not all come together immediately, which could lead to a slow start to the regular season.

The Steelers only have three preseason games, as that has been the standard in recent years, but the veteran acquisitions will not be expected to see much action. That will make it extremely important for them all to mesh in both practice, and the locker room. There is turnover on every professional roster each season, but this has been a complete overall. Pittsburgh's coaching staff will have to make sure the rapport is built by the time Week 1 rolls around in September.

Steelers Still Have Another Distraction Looming

One player that could absolutely be absent from training camp is TJ Watt. The team's star edge rusher has been nowhere to be seen as he awaits a new contract extension that is expected to total at, or over, $40 million annually. The defender has been one of the few constants on the team in recent seasons, so his potential absence (or hold-in) will be talked about if a deal does not get done. That seems to be the final piece of the puzzle at this point for Pittsburgh's 2025 season.
