Steelers Don't "Feel Like They Need To Add" Any More Offensive Weapons Prior To Training Camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers are built to get back to old school football in 2025 with how big their offense has become this offseason. That may have been done to deal with the fact that they lack wide receiver depth, but as long as it works, no one in Steeler Nation will care too much. There are still a handful of free agents available, as well as pieces that the team could trade for. Training camp starts soon, so if there is a time to go out and add to this unit, now is the time to do so.

The Steelers may not be willing to take what's available, however. While making an appearance on NFL Live, insider Dan Graziano said that he had some conversations with people inside the facility about the situation, and he got a clear indication about how they feel about the position room.

"I don’t get the sense, in talking to the Steelers, that they feel like they need to add a wide receiver," Graziano said. "Jonnu Smith is kind of a wide receiver playing tight end, and again, they like the idea of him on the field as an explosive option along with DK Metcalf and Calvin Austin for a team that -- let's face it -- probably going to run the ball a lot."

Numerous reports have come out that the Steelers love Jonnu Smith's versatility, and they want to move him all around the offense in multiple roles. Even if he wasn't the main part of the big trade with the Miami Dolphins, the team clearly doesn't see him as a throwaway in the deal. They have big plans for him, and he's part of the reason why they are not in a rush to load up more.

Former Miami Dolphins and now-Steelers tight end Jonnu Smith (#9) enters the field before a game against the Arizona Cardinals at Hard Rock Stadium on Oct. 27, 2024 in Miami Gardens, Florida.

During the offseason program, Wide Receivers Coach Zach Azzanni announced that Calvin Austin III would be the starting wideout opposite of DK Metcalf. Instead of dealing with all the questions about the depth throughout the year like Pittsburgh did in 2024, Azzanni told the world how confident he is in the fourth-year speedster. There's no anticipation of deck chairs being shuffled around just to get marginally better in that spot.

Of course, when you're looking for probable starters and key contributors in the middle of July, odds are you won't find much of anything. The best options are aging veterans, and there is likely some sort of catch to why each of them is still unsigned at this point. The Steelers already have Robert Woods under contract, so how would any other unemployed veteran give the team a major boost?

The trade market is somewhat dry as well. The best options would likely be one of the young players from the Green Bay Packers, since they drafted a pair of wideouts in 2025, including one with their first-round pick. If someone like Christian Watson becomes available for a mid-round pick, it wouldn't hurt to take a swing and see what happens, but the odds of that happening are still very slim.

Metcalf is clearly the top option for Pittsburgh, and Austin is the other starter. The Steelers will run a lot of two tight end sets to get Smith involved, as well as boost the run game. There's already a dogfight behind the two starters for reps, so adding a veteran would only make it harder on others to get their chance.

Steelers' Receiver Depth Behind Metcalf And Austin

For starters, Roman Wilson only played five snaps in 2024 due to injury. The former third-round pick still has upside, so he will need his chances to prove that he's not an absolute bust. Ben Skowronek has become beloved by the coaching staff for his ability to block and get dirty. Woods may be called upon in tough situations, since he's seen and done almost everything in this league.
