The Pittsburgh Steelers have a new-look roster as the team arrives in Latrobe, PA for training camp ahead of the 2025 NFL season. One of the position groups that looks the most different is wide receiver, as some fans are still clamoring for the organization to add some depth to the group. Pittsburgh made the stunning trade to acquire DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks before free agency began during the 2025 offseason, and then the franchise parted ways with George Pickens as he was dealt to the Dallas Cowboys. Metcalf is now the top dog in the room for Pittsburgh, while fans will be watching how the rest of the room shakes out throughout camp.

Outside of Metcalf, Pittsburgh also brought in Robert Woods from the outside during free agency. He fits the mold of the typical veteran wide receiver addition the Steelers have made over the last couple of years, however he has his sights set on being more than a veteran presence in the locker room. He spoke to the media after reporting to training camp on Wednesday, and he shared he sees himself competing to be the number two wide out in Pittsburgh.
Robert Woods was asked about trying to be the No. 2 receiver.

“I know DK is the guy but I’ve always competed to be No. 1. That’s how you make yourself better.”
Woods has always been a proficient wide receiver, but his production has slowed down in recent years. He spent the last two seasons with the Houston Texans where he was buried on the depth chart behind some young and talented wide receivers, but he did see some opportunities due to injuries. Over those two years he caught 60 passes for over 600 yards and a touchdown.

Woods had the best years of his career while he was with the Los Angeles Rams. He spent five seasons there and won a Super Bowl. He caught over 85 passes in three straight seasons, and was always extremely efficient. He is now looking to be the number two wide receiver for the Steelers, and he will be competing with others for the job. Calvin Austin III is likely the favorite to be the second wide receiver on the depth chart when the season begins, and Roman Wilson will look to make an impact after essentially red-shirting his rookie year.
The former Ram and Texan has more experience than the other two wide receivers combined, but Austin and Wilson's physical attributes are off the charts. Austin can take the top off of any defense in the league, and Wilson has always been praised for his route running abilities. Maybe Woods will be able to surprise some fans throughout camp with some stellar performances, but it is hard to believe he will be on the depth chart above Austin.
Wilson is the wild card in the wide receiver room for Pittsburgh. Before he was injured in 2024, it was reported he was having some good practices, and by most accounts, he has had a great spring of training. There is a chance he can come out and make it hard for Woods to see the field.

Steelers' Aaron Rodgers Will Likely Trust Robert Woods More
Aaron Rodgers needs to be able to trust his receivers, and it is fair to assume that Woods would have a high football IQ based on his time spent in the league. He and Rodgers will likely always be on the same page, and that could play a role in how the depth chart turns out. Austin has also spoken highly about the time he has already spent with Rodgers since the veteran quarterback signed his deal, but it will be important that both players on the same page with the four-time league MVP.
