The Pittsburgh Steelers have made significant changes to several position groups this offseason, bringing almost a fresh start to the team. While the quarterback situation has dominated most of the headlines, there’s a growing sense of excitement around the potential of the tight end group. This unit, already filled with talent, has been further strengthened with new additions, each player bringing a unique skill set to the table.

In a recent article by Mike DeFabo of The Athletic, the Steelers’ tight end group was highlighted for the unique versatility and potential they bring to the offense. Pat Freiermuth, one of the key pieces in that room, shared insight into how Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith intends to incorporate the group’s versatile talent into his system. Freiermuth spoke highly of Smith, sharing his ability to design a flexible scheme that plays to the unit’s strengths, while also ensuring players are put in situations where they feel comfortable.

"The guys that we have in the tight end room, we have a lot of skill sets in there," Freiermuth said. "I think Art [Arthur Smith] does a great job of getting us in looks that we want to be in. If the defense is going to play something that we don’t feel comfortable matchup-wise, then we’re not going to do it. But if we can get in four tight ends, three tight ends, and we have an advantage schematically, then we’re going to go out there and we’re going to run it."

Freiermuth has been a key piece of the Steelers' offense since being drafted in 2021. In September 2024, he signed a three-year extension, signaling the team’s long-term commitment to keeping him in Pittsburgh. Over the past couple of seasons, Freiermuth has seen an increase in targets, and that trend is expected to continue, especially now with veteran quarterback and future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers throwing the football.

Also returning is Darnell Washington, a tight end drafted by the Steelers in 2023. While he hasn’t made quite the same impact as Freiermuth so far, Washington is expected to take a step forward in his production this season. In fact, some reports suggest he could become a key red zone target for Rodgers, thanks to his size and physical presence near the goal line.

Additionally, the Steelers recently acquired tight end Jonnu Smith in a trade with the Miami Dolphins. Smith is coming off an impressive season, where injuries in Miami gave him the opportunity to see increased targets and showcase his skills. What makes Jonnu especially exciting is his versatility, particularly his ability as a receiver. In fact, he was recognized as one of the best in the NFL when it comes to yards after catch, a skill that could be very valuable for the Steelers’ offensive scheme.

While each of these tight ends bring a unique skill set to the table, they all share the traits expected of the tight end position; strength, blocking ability, and physicality. Freiermuth’s recent comments have only added to the anticipation, as fans look forward to seeing how Arthur Smith will use each player's individual strengths while maintaining a strong, unconventional tight end presence within the offense.

Steelers Are Giving Rodgers More Receiving Weapons

With this likely being Rodgers’ final season, the Steelers appear to be surrounding him with as many offensive weapons as possible to set him up for success. Rodgers’ arm has always been what separates him from most quarterbacks, and even now, it remains his greatest asset. Keeping with Arthur Smith’s adaptable offensive approach, the playbook will likely be tailored to fit Rodgers' strengths as well, and the Steelers could be in for a big year through the air.

Of course, a balanced offense will still be crucial, as Rodgers can’t be expected to throw on every down, but it will be exciting to watch a future Hall of Famer throw the ball, especially to dynamic playmakers like the tight ends.
