Steelers Fans May Have Ben Roethlisberger To Thank For New Contract Dispute

The Pittsburgh Steelers have had an extremely eventful offseason in 2025. General Manager Omar Khan was very busy as he attempted to upgrade the roster while going through the saga of signing Aaron Rodgers. He was also dealing with trying to get an extension done with star outside linebacker TJ Watt, which was a situation that kept a lot of fans on the edge of their seats. A deal got done before training camp, and all of the contract drama seemed to be over. However, that has changed, as a pair of impactful Pittsburgh players are looking for restructured contracts.

News broke on Thursday that both Cam Heyward and Chris Boswell are looking for new deals. Heyward just signed an extension before the 2024 season, but he is holding-in at training camp as he looks for a deal that better reflects the current market for his position. This makes sense considering he was an All-Pro in 2024.

Boswell is widely considered the best kicker in the NFL, but he is not paid like it. He is currently the 10th highest-paid kicker in the league when it comes to average annual value, and he would like a new deal where he is near the top of the market.

Boswell was the AFC North's lowest-paid kicker in 2024, which shouldn't be the case considering how he has produced and how reliable he has been throughout his career in Pittsburgh. Former Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger shared similar thoughts during a recent episode of his podcast, where he stated that Pittsburgh needs to give Boswell a new deal that reflects his value.

It is certainly possible that Boswell and his team began discussing a new deal with Pittsburgh prior to Roethlisberger making his comments, but there is also a chance that those conversations didn't begin until Roethlisberger spoke his mind. Most of the time when players are upset with their contracts and are searching for more money, fans call them selfish or greedy. This is not one of those cases, as Boswell deserves a raise more than anyone.

Pittsburgh's offense has been inconsistent and stagnant in recent years, and Boswell's leg has been relied upon a ton. The Steelers won two games during the 2024 season without the offense scoring any touchdowns, and Boswell hitting six field goals in each contest. There is a strong argument that he should be the highest-paid kicker in the league, and Pittsburgh should look to make that happen before the 2025 season begins.

Steelers Now Have The Best Kicker In The League

Fans in Pittsburgh know how good Boswell is, but he has lived in the shadows of Justin Tucker for years. Tucker is currently dealing with some off-the-field legal issues, and he is not currently on a roster. This makes Boswell arguably the best kicker in the NFL, with Brandon Aubrey of the Dallas Cowboys being his strongest competition.

The Steelers can certainly recognize how important Boswell has been to the team over the last decade, and the organization shouldn't hesitate to give him whatever money he wants. A deal should get done before the season begins, but it will be interesting to see how long a new contract keeps him in Pittsburgh.
