The Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t won a playoff game since the 2016 season. Despite that, Head Coach Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season in his 18 years at the helm. That’s remarkable in the ever-competitive NFL, but it’s not enough to explain his lack of postseason success. The fan base has been begging for change, and it seems like the majority wants Tomlin fired. That’s not going to happen, but change did happen, specifically on defense where the Steelers made some big moves.

When Tomlin spoke to the media on Wednesday, he cashed a big check with his comments about the defense and secondary. He made it clear that the team’s defensive identity is a priority heading into the 2025 season. With new additions and a refreshed mindset, Tomlin is signaling a commitment to fixing the unit that has struggled in recent years. His confidence in the defense shows that the Steelers are serious about returning to playoff contention.
While fans may remain impatient for postseason victories, Tomlin’s track record of consistency can’t be ignored. The upcoming season will be a critical test for the Steelers’ revamped defense and the coach’s leadership. Whether the changes on the defensive side will finally translate into playoff success remains to be seen, but the message from Tomlin is clear. This team is ready to fight harder than ever.
"We use a variety of schematics in an effort to minimize passing offenses," Tomlin said. "But you’ve got to be able to play matchup football. You’ve got to be able to play man to man, particularly versus the elite and deep groups. And the talent that we’ve acquired at ... particularly the cornerback position, allows to do that in all circumstances."
The Steelers have Jalen Ramsey, Joey Porter Jr., and Darius Slay leading the way in their cornerback room. That’s a very dangerous trio, and Tomlin is extremely confident about this group. Of course, staying healthy will be a big concern, as Ramsey and Slay are getting older.

In the 2024 season, the Steelers’ secondary struggled significantly. It was a pitch-and-catch situation in many games, which forced them to make some major changes. It sounds like Tomlin believes he has one of the best units in the NFL now.
"Guys like Jalen Ramsey, Slay and [Porter], we can match up and play man to man against anyone," Tomlin said. "I think that will do nothing but strengthen our schematics, the supplemental things, the zone pressures, the bogus pressures and things of that nature."
The Steelers defense will once again be one of the highest compensated units in the league. What happened toward the end of the 2024 season was clearly unacceptable, and the team’s leadership is fully aware that it cannot happen again. The front office made significant moves in the offseason, believing they have done everything possible to restore the Steelers to true contender status.

With improved depth and a renewed focus on fundamentals, the Steelers aim to strengthen both their pass rush and secondary, which were major areas of concern last year. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if this revamped defense can become a dominant force once again under Tomlin’s leadership.
