It is not a secret that the Pittsburgh Steelers have been unable to win a playoff game since the 2016 season. It is a drought that the entire organization has had to hear about for nearly a decade. It's unfortunate that the team was not able to make one more final run towards the end of Ben Roethlisberger's incredible career, but it's safe to say that he will still be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame not too far along down the road. The franchise will look to get back into the postseason win column with Aaron Rodgers under center in 2025.

The Steelers participated in their final preseason contest of the year on Thursday, and it's safe to say that the offense is still a bit of a concern. Rodgers hasn't played, and neither has DK Metcalf, but the offensive line doesn't seem to be operating as efficiently as fans would like. There is very little time to get on the same page, so the hope is that it all changes once the regular season kicks off.
After the 19-10 win over the Carolina Panthers, former NFL All-Pro running back Maurice Jones-Drew gave his analysis on NFL Network. In an odd and untimely fashion, the retired ball carrier turned analyst tried comparing the present day Steelers to the same teams that featured Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell.
"In the very beginning, when they were the Killer Bs, when they had Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, Le'Veon Bell, they were scoring all these points and yet they still weren't winning," Jones-Drew said. "So, Mike Tomlin's trying to go back to a balanced attack where you're having the offense be able to make some plays and a stout defense."
From 2013-2017, despite some injuries to members of the legendary trio from time to time, the Steelers had a record of 53-27 in the regular season. On top of that, the team made a trip to the AFC Championship Game during the 2016 season. Pittsburgh was, in fact, scoring points, and winning, contrary to what Jones-Drew said on national television after the team's third preseason matchup of the 2025 season.

After Bell's 2018 holdout and Brown's meltdown at the end of the same season, the Steelers lost what was the most formidable offensive trio throughout the NFL. Everything has been downhill since the 2019 campaign began and Roethlisberger suffered a season-ending elbow injury. Head Coach Mike Tomlin has not been able to find that rhythm on offense since, and the defense has been up and down, facing inconsistencies often.
Fans in the Steel City would do anything to go back to the teams that featured Roethlisberger, Brown and Bell because those squads were always in every game. Putting up 30 or more points each week almost became a regularity, which led to plenty of success. The unit hit its peak in 2016, but was unable to escape the AFC Championship Game with a victory.
Jones-Drew's comments were seemingly uncalled for given the false narrative that was presented. Roethlisberger and co. were dominant on the offensive end during the Killer Bs era, it just sadly never transitioned into a seventh Lombardi trophy for the organization. That is something that remains a mystery to this day.

Steelers Have To Find Some Offensive Magic In 2025
While no one is expecting another incredible trio of weapons on offense to emerge in 2025, Rodgers has the veteran prowess to lead a formidable group. Players like Metcalf will need to step up to sound out the doubters such as Jones-Drew. If fans in the Steel City can get just a simple glimpse of consistency, the tides will turn and the organization could turn into a threat in the AFC very quickly.
