The Pittsburgh Steelers, along with the NFL’s 31 other teams, are finalizing roster cuts and personnel decisions as the 2025 regular season approaches. With the Steelers entering win-now mode, Omar Khan and the front office could look to the trade market ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline. One position that the Steelers could potentially target via trade is wide receiver, and one AFC East team might have a pass catcher that could help Pittsburgh's offense.

The Steelers brought in four-time NFL Most Valuable Player, Aaron Rodgers in an attempt to improve their offensive production after another season that saw poor offensive performances and another first-round playoff exit. Pittsburgh still has some question marks at the wide receiver position.
Pittsburgh traded for DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks, a proven superstar wide receiver who will bring an immediate impact to the Steelers' offense. After Metcalf, however, things get a little dicey for the black and gold. Calvin Austin III is coming off an improved 2024 campaign where he caught 36 passes for 548 yards and four touchdowns.
Roman Wilson only played five snaps during his 2024 rookie season, but he showed some flashes during the 2025 preseason. If the Steelers want to add another weapon for Rodgers, the Buffalo Bills might be the team to call.
Curtis Samuel is entering his ninth year in the league out of Ohio State. Samuel spent 2024 with the Bills after four seasons with the Carolina Panthers and three seasons with the Washington Commanders. At 29 years old, Samuel doesn't quite have the playmaking abilities that he did in the early stages of his career, but he can definitely add another dimension to the Steelers' offense.

Samuel caught 31 passes in 2024 for 253 yards and just one touchdown in 14 games. Although he has had some injuries in his career, Samuel adds some versatility that the Steelers value on offense. Samuel can play outside, in the slot, or even in the backfield. Samuel’s ability to line up anywhere across the formation would give offensive coordinator Arthur Smith a valuable chess piece.
The Steelers wouldn't be asking for Samuel to do much in the offense with Metcalf, Austin, and Wilson certainly being heavily featured week-in and wee- out. If the Steelers do trade for Samuel, he will be behind the eight-ball in terms of learning the offense given the short time between a potential trade and kickoff of the 2025 season. Samuel will likely fit in somewhere as either the third or fourth wide receiver on the depth chart, but could make a case to be featured more as the season prolongs.

Pittsburgh likely wouldn't have to give up much in exchange for Samuel. The Steelers have 12 total draft picks for the 2026 NFL Draft, five of those being in rounds 5 through 7. It would likely only take a fifth, sixth, or seventh round pick to acquire Samuel, with Buffalo likely cutting him if they don't find a trade partner before Tuesday's deadline.
Steelers' Offense Needs To Take Step Forward During 2025 Season
The Steelers traded for Metcalf as well as Jonnu Smith in an attempt to add explosive weapons for Rodgers. Between Metcalf, Smith, Austin, and Wilson along with returning tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington, a trade for a guy like Samuel could add another flare to the Pittsburgh offense.
The Steelers' offense needs to see improvement in 2025 if they want to compete for a championship. It is clear that the defense will be one of the best in the league, but if the offense isn't able to produce, it could be another long season in the Steel City.
Do you think that Samuel would be worth a late-round draft pick? Or should the Steelers save that pick and use it in the 2026 Draft? Let us know in the comments below!
